Call for Papers: 6th PSA/BISA Learning and Teaching Conference

The 6th Annual Political Studies Association/British International Studies Association

(PSA/BISA) Learning and Teaching Conference will take place between 9th and 10th September 2013 at the University of Westminster, London, UK. This year’s event is will be exploring the opportunities and need for innovation in the teaching of Politics and International Relations in the UK and beyond in the new higher education environment.

The call for paper proposals closes on 16 May 2013 and full details are provided on the attached flyer.

PSA Annual Conference 2013: Teaching and Learning Highlights

The PSA Annual conference will take place in Cardiff this year from the 25 – 27th March.

There are six teaching and learning panels scheduled covering:

· Pedagogy Research and Teaching Politics

· Not another lecture: other ways to teach and learn politics

· Research-led teaching in Politics and International Relations

· Studying Politics: Transitions and Employability

· Teaching Research Methods in Politics

· Using Technology to Enhance Student Learning in Politics

In addition John Ishiyama (University of North Texas and Editor, American Political Science Review) will be speaking on 'The Future of Political Science' at the Inaugural PSA Teaching and Learning Plenary (sponsored by Politics)

New Book 1: Teaching Civic Engagement: From Student to Active Citizen

APSA has published a new book on Teaching Civic Engagement, edited by Alison Rios Millett McCartney, Elizabeth A. Bennion, and Dick Simpson. Written by political scientists from a range of institution types and subfields, Teaching Civic Engagement makes the case that civic and political engagement should be a central part of the mission as a discipline. This book explores key practices in educating citizens in the 21st century and addresses theoretical debates of the place of civic engagement education in political science and offers pedagogical examples in several subfields. Teaching Civic Engagement also includes an online supplement which provides additional materials and resources.

New Book 2: Teaching Politics Beyond the Book: Film, Texts, and New Media in the Classroom

Bloomsbury Publishing have launched a new book edited by Robert W. Glover and Daniel Tagliarina which “seeks new ways to foster learning beyond the textbook and lecture model, by using creative and new media, including graphic novels, animated films, hip-hop music, Twitter, and more”. Chapter authors include Simon Lightfoot (University of Leeds).

Post-Graduate Bursaries for the Study of Parliament

The Houses of Parliament and the Higher Education Academy (HEA) are offering a limited number of bursaries to post-graduate students writing a dissertation on any aspect of Parliament.

Bursaries of up to £350 per individual application will be available to support innovative, original research about the Houses of Parliament. Dissertations should examine an aspect of the institution of Parliament; the procedures, processes, business, members, administration or the Estate.

The deadline for completed application forms is midday on Friday 19 April 2013.

The Journal of Political Science Education (APSA’s political science learning and teaching journal) has issued a call for papers for a special issue on teaching research methods. Further details are attached.

Call for Applications – Convenor PSA Quantitative Methods Network

To develop and support QM capacity specifically for politics teaching, the PSA invites applications to lead a PSA Quantitative Methods Teaching Network. The network would be expected to:

· Develop innovative, accessible and engaging politics-focused teaching resources to support politics QM lecturers;

· Share and spread best practice in engaging often reluctant students with QM teaching;

· Develop and maintain a Network website accessible to network members (hosted by PSA);

· Where possible, highlight links to politics datasets that may be used for politics teaching, learning and research;

· Hold regular workshops or conferences focused on teaching and learning QM skills;

· Work in co-operation with PSA and the Teaching and Learning Committee to promote the development and reach of QM skills in the politics curriculum.
