Subject: Revision of Canteen Rates

On the subject noted above, committee held its meeting on 8th January, 2014 and the following observations were made:

i. Current contract for PIDE canteen will expire on 10th February, 2014, therefore it is recommended that fresh advertisement for new contract may be made and the existing contractors may be required to apply afresh.

ii. There has to be a prequalification/experience of running such canteens by the applicants, because in earlier contracts it was observed that due to inexperience canteen was not run smoothly.

iii. For the fresh contract compatible rates item wise may be collected from the nearby hotels/ canteen such as Social Huts, Karachi Huts and Majeed Huts (Mr. Laiq Shah please arrange these).

iv. Further it was suggested that instead of a long list, some items may be required for the contractor to furnish rates/quality/quantity. As the turnover of customers has significantly reduced due to availability of better food stuff and location wise preferable canteens.

v. For these few items quality/quantity should be required of good standard. Bindings such as using a particular brand of Oil (e.g. Man-Pasand), red-pepper (e.g. national), tea (e.g. Supreme) should be made part of the contract and once contract is awarded there should be follow up on quantity and quality and strict action for non-compliance.

vi. For those items for which binding is not required may be left for the contractor to improve upon variety and quality and charge rates which makes him/her compatible with the rest of canteens in the area.

vii. There is a need to include items such as snacks and juices in the list of items to be produced as these are not provided so far.

viii. Regarding the quality and pricing of items such as biscuits, tetra pack juices, it is recommended that only branded items should be sold at the counter and their rates should not exceed the rates printed on them.

ix. Regarding the billing it was identified by some of the customers that they don’t know the rates and they are over billed, so it is suggested that item wise rate list should be printed on a Pena flex with readable size fonts and may be placed at suitable place. Secondly there should be an item wise small bill to accompany when canteen staff is asked to tell the amount.

More suggestions for improvements in canteen affairs are also requested from the staff through the PIDE blog, hopefully within a week these will also be provided to the office of the registrar for improvement in canteen affairs.
