The following guidelines are to be used when parvo shifts are taking over 3 hours due to a full ICU:
6 doses are required for the following groups:
Puppies sick enough to be on an IV Pump
Group 4 puppies (from shelters that have a history of Distemper)
Try to get up to 6 doses in the following groups:
Puppies 15lbs and under
Administer doses until IV is blown or puppy pulls out IV.
Puppies that break with URI while in the ICU *do not hold a puppy back from leaving the ICU due to IV Vitamin C*
All other dogs receive one dose at intake
Important Administration Notes
IV Vitamin C must be diluted with NaCl - undiluted, it can cause severe pain (phlebitis) and necrosis of the tissues in the area. Always flush IV to ensure it is patent prior to administering Vitamin C
Can cause nausea and vomiting. Administer slowly to reduce side effects.
Pre-mixing a bag of IV Vitamin C
Add 80mL of Vitamin C into a bag of 250mL NaCl ( 121mg/mL vitamin C in saline)
Dosage: 3.7mL per lb (1000mg/kg). Round down.
Protect from light. Vitamin C is light sensitive.
Keep refrigerated.
One bag will last for 90lbs of dog!
For dogs over 15lbs, dose can be administered as a bolus on an IV pump. ENSURE IV CATHETER IS PATENT prior to starting bolus. Run bolus over 20-30 minutes.
