Vaccine Protocols

This document contains information on the various vaccines and associated protocols. Parvo patients receive DAPP and Bordatella vaccinations on intake.

DAPP Vaccine

This vaccine prevents the following diseases:

• Distemper

• Adenovirus - Canine Adenovirus Type-2 (CAV-2) causes upper respiratory symptoms. CAV-1 causes hepatitis.

• Parvo

• Parainfluenza - A highly contagious respiratory disease that can cause kennel cough symptoms. The disease can progress to pneumonia in puppies or chronic bronchitis in older dogs.  Each puppy receives a booster once every 2 weeks until 16 weeks old.

Puppies: Starting at 4 wks of age and re-vaccinate/boost every 2 weeks until 20wks of age

Adult dogs: 5 months or older, receive 2 total vaccines in a shelter setting

• A Parvo positive dog with no known medical history should be vaccinated immediately upon intake into the ward.

• The vaccine is given SQ in the front right shoulder at APA!. It should be given just above the elbow if possible. 

• If a medical history is known and vaccines are up-to-date, note on patient's chart.

Bordatella Vaccine (Intra-Nasal)

Bordetella is a bacterial infection of the respiratory system of dogs characterized by severe coughing and gagging. It is a very contagious airborne disease, and is one of the causes of the canine upper respiratory disease, tracheobronchitis or "kennel cough."

All dogs:  vaccinated once as early as 6 wks of age. No booster is required by APA!.

A parvo positive dog with no known medical history should be vaccinated upon intake into the ward.

If the medical history is known then no vaccine is needed.

The Bordetella vaccine is intra-nasal, which means it is given in the nose. Do not inject the bordetella vaccine under the skin. This can cause immediate anaphylactic response and death.

Rabies Vaccine

Rabies is a preventable viral disease of mammals most often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal. The vast majority of rabies cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) each year occur in wild animals like raccoons, skunks, bats, and foxes.The rabies virus infects the central nervous system, ultimately causing disease in the brain and death. 

The vaccine can be administered at 4 months of age or older. This will be done by medical technicians in the clinic in the at time of discharge from Parvo ICU. The rabies vaccine is not stored or administered in the Parvo ICU.

A veterinarian must be present at the facility and examine the animal immediately before administering this vaccine!!
