Pack 89 Families,
What a weekend! District Pinewood Derby and Blue & Gold! I hope everyone had a good time. Thank you Vince Caravello and all who helped with Blue & Gold is was a great event! We also hit the ground running at the meeting and we have two new Bobcats (well, we will at the next Pack meeting) – congratulations Kevin McGrath and Christopher Langford – don’t forget to bring your band aides! Without further ado, here is what we have coming up on our calendar.
1) Den Meeting! (13 Mar at Glebe – Webelos Is will meet at Berea) Hope everyone is moving right along!
2) WEBELOS IIs CRABTREE FALLS (15-18 Mar). NEW INFO! The Blackbirds have a stand-alone hiking adventure to the Blue Ridge Mountains to see the tallest waterfall in Virginia. This annual rite of passage is a great experience and a good time to put into practice those patrol camping skills as the boys prepare to bridge into Boy Scouts. The Blackbirds should have their meal plans and grub masters picked out. Show us all what you can do!
3) Troop Spaghetti Dinner! (17 Mar). Troop 16 doesn’t use popcorn sales to replenish its budget. All the popcorn commissions go to the Scouts. Of course, their great program still needs some funding and they do it with spaghetti! They only have one fund raiser for Troop needs and it is delicious. What to take a break from cooking Saturday night? Come over to Glebe Church on Mar 17th and chow down from 4:00 – 7:00! Tickets are $8 apiece. If you have not purchased tickets you can get them at the door, so if you change your mind at the last minute, come on by!
4) Den Meeting! (20 Mar at Glebe – Webelos Is will meet at Berea) What electives have you been working on? How are they going?
5) Beech Grove Mulching Party! (24 Mar) Time to spruce up our home church for Easter! Come out in your Class B tees and clothes you don’t mind getting grubby and help us spread some beautiful new mulch. We’ll do some weeding and general clean-up too. Many hands make light work – and the kids love this. The whole family is invited and if you can only come by for a while that is fine. If you have rakes, wheelbarrows, shovels or pitchforks, please bring them along. Start time is usually around 8 – 8:30 am or as soon as you can get there after that! We finish by about 11.
6) Arrow of Light Boards! (Every Tues until April) Web IIs, I hope you have been studying … I know you are qualified, now’s the time to show it. You need to start scheduling your Arrow of Light Boards. Maximum is 3 per night. Sharp Class A uniform with neckerchief and slide and all your regalia. Impress Mr. Ward and the other members of the review board.
7) Den Meeting! (27 Mar at Glebe) NEW INFO! Bottle Rocket Build Night! Bottle Rocket night is one of the boys’ favorite activities. This night is the construction night. You should bring two 2-liter plastic soda bottles for each boy. We will supply the fins. If you have extra 2-liter bottles please bring them as well along with any extra hot glue guns (this will help prevent bottle necks for the tools). This is a workshop meeting to get everyone ready for launch night. Every boy should leave with a fully operational (minus the pressure system) rocket that will just need their own customization at home.
8) No Meeting! (3 Apr) Enjoy your Spring Break!
9) Den Meeting! (10 April at Glebe) NEW INFO! Rocket Launch!!! As this is a special event, we need to start early to make the most of the daylight and maximize flight times. Please be at Glebe at 6:30 p.m. Moms and Dads, we need help loading payloads on launchers and filling fuel cells, so please come prepared to get WET!
10) Colonial Trail Cub-O-Ree! (13-15 Apr) NEW INFO! If you like to camp, we have the event for you! This is your chance to come out and have a blast with scouts from Packs all over Suffolk and camp with your scout. This year’s theme is Native Americans and the event will be held at Matanock Town! It is always a great time with lots of fun games and competitions for everyone. We will have a sign-up sheet out beginning next week. Pricing is $15 per scout and participating siblings (includes a patch) and $8 for all others. T-shirts are $10. Registrations after April 1 will be $10 extra. Attached is the Leaders and Parents Guide. Also, this being a local event, if you have to leave for a bit for a baseball game, etc., that is okay, just come on back and rejoin the fun when you are done! We hope you can make it!
11) Ruritan BBQ Chicken Dinner! (14 Apr) NEW INFO! Can’t make the campout because you’re busy? I bet you’re too busy to cook too – so don’t! Let the Driver Ruritans do it for you with their amazing chicken dinners (see flyer attached). The Driver Ruritans have supported the Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and are the Chartered Organization for Troop 16’s Boy Scouts. Their fund raisers flow right back to our units to keep the programs vibrant. All you need to do is Eat More Chicken! That’s easy to do since the Ruritans are experts at this.
12) Pack Meeting! (17 Apr) We know you have stayed busy earning awards—let’s see what ones! Class A uniforms, no hats. We are meeting at Berea Christian Church. This is the last Pack meeting for our Blackbirds!
13) Arrow of Light Bridging! (21 Apr) NEW INFO! Blackbirds (and anyone interested) will be meeting at Johnson’s Garden Center to be awarded Cub Scouting’s highest award/rank – the Arrow of Light. This will be a great show and worthwhile culmination of the five years they’ve invested in scouting. Then they will Bridge over to their respective Troops and become Boy Scouts. Hawk leaders and parents, if available, you may want to come by…
