Pack 89 Families,
Wow, we covered a lot of ground this week. Finished AoL Boards, built dozens of rockets, cooked a meal, decided to put on our own Pack Summer Day Camp, held a farewell awards ceremony for our Wolverines, did I miss anything? Well, things will not be slowing down, let’s take look . . . also, bring your registration forms (page 13 of the Leaders Guide) and payment if you are attending Cub O Ree this year, next week is the last meeting to pay without incurring the $10 late fee per person.
1) Arrow of Light Bridging! (1 Apr) Wolverines (and anyone interested) will be meeting at Johnson’s Garden Center to be awarded Cub Scouting’s highest award/rank – the Arrow of Light. This will be a great show and worthwhile culmination of the five years they’ve invested in scouting. Then they will Bridge over to their respective Troops and become Boy Scouts. Blackbird leaders and parents, if available, you may want to come by…
2) Den Meeting! (4 April at Glebe) NEW INFO! Rocket Launch!!! As this is a special event, we need to start early to make the most of the daylight and maximize flight times. Please be at Glebe at 6:30 p.m. Moms and Dads, we need help loading payloads on launchers and filling fuel cells, so please come prepared to get WET! Also this is the last Den meeting before regular registration ends for Cub-O-Ree (see item 6 below). Wolverines, if you made a bottle rocket and want to launch it – come on by!
3) Beech Grove Mulching Party! (8 Apr) Time to spruce up our home church for Easter! Come out in your Class B tees and clothes you don’t mind getting grubby and help us spread some beautiful new mulch. We’ll do some weeding and general clean-up too. Many hands make light work – and the kids love this. The whole family is invited and if you can only come by for a while that is fine. If you have rakes, wheelbarrows, shovels or pitchforks, please bring them along. Start time is usually around 8:30 am or as soon as you can get there after that! We finish in the 11 – 12 timeframe.
4) No Meeting! (11 Apr) Enjoy your Spring Break!
5) Pack Meeting! (18 Apr) We know you have stayed busy earning awards—let’s see what ones! Class A uniforms, no hats. We are back at Beech Grove.
6) Colonial Trail Cub-O-Ree! (21-23 Apr) If you like to camp, we have the event for you! This is your chance to come out and have a blast with scouts from Packs all over Suffolk and camp with your scout. This year’s theme is Gaming and the event will be held at Mattanock Town (Lone Stare Lakes)! It should be a great time with lots of fun games and competitions for everyone. Pricing is $15 per scout and participating siblings and $8 for all others. Attached is the Leaders and Parents Guide – Page 13 is the registration form, please bring it with you next week if you plan to attend. Also, this being a local event, if you have to leave for a bit for a baseball game, soccer, etc., that is okay, just come on back and rejoin the fun when you are done! We hope you can make it! Remember, registrations after April 8 will be $10 extra.
7) Ruritan BBQ Chicken Dinner! (22 Apr) Can’t make the campout because you’re busy? I bet you’re too busy to cook too – so don’t! Let the Driver Ruritans do it for you with their amazing chicken dinners (see Flyer). The Driver Ruritans have supported the Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and are the Chartered Organization for Troop 16’s Boy Scouts. Their fund raisers flow right back to our units to keep the programs vibrant. All you need to do is Eat More Chicken! That’s easy to do since the Ruritans are experts at this.
8) Den Meeting! (25 Apr) NEW INFO! We will have special guests from Troop 16’s Order of the Arrow. They will be demonstrating scouting skills to the whole pack at various stations with everyone getting a chance to participate and to learn from some of Scouting’s Best!
9) Pack 89 Day Camp! (19-23 Jun) NEW INFO! So the Pack voted to host its own Day Camp! You know it is going to be great. Thank you Linda Hughes for volunteering to take point on this project! This week was our initial meeting to decide how we want to go. Linda Hughes has already been designing T-shirts, contacting Suffolk Parks & Rec, and working on program ideas, but she will need help and lots of it. This is a whole Pack endeavor. Please look out for upcoming notices and sign-up sheets as we develop and staff our program.
10) Webelos Resident Camp (30 July – 3 Aug) NEW INFO! Overnighters and day camps are fun, but what about “going to camp?” We’ve got that covered too. Rising Web Is and IIs (current Bears and Web Is) will get to head off to the mountains to our favorite camp Powhatan. Nestled high in the Blue Ridge Mountains Council, the weather is temperate, there are no mosquitos, and the program offered is exceptional. We’ll be having several planning meetings before they go detailing the event, but you DO NOT need to go out and buy a bunch of camping gear. The boys (and you) will all camp in BSA tents, the meals are provided, and the adventures pre-planned. All you’ll need are uniforms, clothes, toiletries, and bedding. We are still waiting for the information on the cost and theme for this year and will put that out as soon as it is available.
