Pack 89 Families,
We had a great Pack Meeting. And wow, was that a lot of Bobcats or what! Well done boys! We are now heading into our Winter Break, but before we do we have one more activity – Christmas Carols at Maryview! Information on that and some of our 2018 (yes, we are there) activities below.
1) Christmas Carols at Maryview (19 Dec) NEW INFO! As we mentioned at the Pack Meeting, we are going to sing Christmas Carols at the Inpatient Rehabilitation Center at Maryview Hospital. We have over 16 Scout Families signed up! If you did not sign up and still want to go, please shoot me an e-mail and I will add you to the list. However, you can still attend even if you do not sign up, but it sure helps us keep track of everyone. So here are the instructions and details:
n We will meet in the lobby of the Maryview Rehab Center at 6:30 p.m. to get everyone together. The Rehab Center entrance is to the left of the Birth and Heart Center that some may be familiar with. We will be singing carols in the dining room and will all enter at one time as a group.
n Attached is a map with labels showing the location of the Rehab Center and parking. The address for the Maryview is 3636 High St, Portsmouth, VA 23707. Parking is back behind the hospital and you will need to take Willet Drive off of High Street and then turn right onto W Rd. Parking will be just past/across from the Birth & Heart Center and the Rehab Center.
n Angela Fiedler, one of our Webelos II Mom’s, is our liaison and will be letting us know where to go and when. Our very own Brian Champigny and David Willis have agreed to help keep us in tune!
n A song sheet will be provided.
2) No Meeting! (26 Dec) Hope Santa was good to everyone! No school, No scouts. Have A Happy New Year. We get right back into things in January, so get your rest!
3) Den Meeting! (2 Jan) Hope everyone had an awesome Christmas/Holiday and is recharged for the New Year! We’ve got lots planned and there’s no time to waste. Blue & Gold is only a couple months away and we want you to make rank! Time to hit those handbooks and master the skills the Den Leaders are dishing up.
4) Den Meeting! (9 Jan) You should have fully recovered from your holiday haze and be hitting full stride as you work toward those Achievements.
5) Den Meeting! (16 Jan) Keep on keeping on.
6) PWD Car Clinic (20 Jan) NEW INFO! 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Beech Grove. The second half of our Cub Scouting year brings with it the Pinewood Derby! If you have not experienced it before, you are in for a great time. If you have, what new designs, names, or paint schemes do you have for us this year! Can you go even faster? Our Pinewood Derby Car Clinics are designed to take the stress out of this great event. If you need access to power tools, car templates, specialty tools (the wheel spindles, car gauges, etc.) we will hook you up. Our Master Pit Mechanic and Pack Grandpa, Jerry Griswold, pulls his whole garage apart to help our boys design their cars, make their cuts, fine tune the wheels, and even get the weights situated. Boys, with parental supervision, will get to operate band saws, drill presses, belt, disk, and spindle sanders all to make their racer the fastest it can be. We will be selling cars ($5 per car) in the weeks before and will have more at the clinic and we’ll have plenty to experience there as well to answer any questions you may have. And yes there is an open family division as well, so siblings and the young at heart are welcome to participate.
7) Klondike Derby! (27-28 Jan) NEW INFO! MUSH!!! The Blackbirds and the Hawks (has anyone else noticed that this Pack is going to the birds?!) are invited to participate with Troop 16 and dozens of other troops at the annual dog sled race and scout skills challenge. Guess who the dogs are? That’s right, scouts, YOU! You’ll mush each other through the frozen wastes of Johnson’s Nursery and compete in knot-tying, fire building, map and compass work, wrist rockets, water rescue and a host of other events. Details to follow during den time, but start getting your warm clothes together, think about a hot meal you’d like to make, and practice the abilities you began at your Webelos Skills Campouts. Blackbirds and Blackbird parents, start thinking about your plan for the cold weather as we camp overnight with the Troop (and prepare our own meals, parents included). Hawks, this is a day trip for you; you’ll get to compete, but you’ll have to wait until next year to camp. Starting thinking about whether you will attend as we need RSVPs for this event as there is a cost involved – typically $12 per scout/scouter plus food
