Jerry Onnen No. 5

Looks like a Ford or Mercury car. Click on the photo for a larger view.   The guys look pretty relaxed.

Rick Weikert shares some information on this car: "The No. 5 car driven by Jerry Onnen was built and owned by Pete Gray, he owned a salvage yard in Muscatine which was just a 1/2 block from my Grandparents house off of Lincoln Blvd.   Pete had several drivers over the years and the cars were always black and white No. 5.   A couple drivers I remember were Bob Kleindolph and Jerry Musgrove.  Bob told me one time that Pete used such large tubing for the roll cage that it half covered the clutch pedal which made shifting very difficult."  Thanks Rick!

You can see some of the other cars in the background. Looks like it was taken at Columbus Junction.  The pits used to be in the center of the big 1/2 mile track.  They still do that today at CJ Raceway in Columbus Junction. Photo taken in 1967 from the Gale Reed Collection.

The photo below was shared by Brian Vanerwal on facebook. The 5X is Jerry Onnen and the 29 is Brian's Dad Carl Vanderwal.
