Mosier, Moss Win in Car Races

by Sports Editor, Harold Blake

Top men in the Mississippi Valley Speedway Club won a race apiece on a double Labor Day weekend program at two tracks.

Point leader Mark Mosier took the race Saturday night at Columbus Junction, but had his double victory bid nipped by Johnny Moss of Iowa City on the last lap of the main event at West Liberty on Monday afternoon.

Mosier lead most of the way on an accident-packed feature at the Liberty track. Once Moss slipped into the lead coming in the homestrech but he lost it because of a restart in a mishap behind them.

The battle between Moss and Mosier continued though a half dozen restarts. Then on the final lap Moss go by Mosier on the inside as cars came down to the checkered flag.

No injuries resulted from the numerous pile-ups, but they took a heavy toll on the machinery. Most spectacular of the mishaps was one in which the cars of Tom Harris of Iowa City, Mel Morris of West Liberty and Bill Neuman of Burlington became entangled.

The the auto of Dave Dodder of Letts took a hard roll on the backstretch as it came into the collection of wrecked vehicles. The car of Harris was demolished and the auto of Neuman was smacked badly on the passenger side. Neuman re entered the race after missing two laps but did not finish in the top 10.

The near capacity crowd watched the afternoon program on a track with which the sun gave officials moisture problems. Water applied before the races dried up quickly, making it very dusty. More water was sprayed several times helping the dust problem but making the oval hard and slippery.

At Columbus Junction on Saturday night, Bud Darting of Wilton suffered cracked ribs in a one car mishap. He was examined at the hospital after his auto plunged off the number 3 turn.

A pair of 50 lap season championship races are on tap the next two Saturday nights. The first at West Liberty and the second at Columbus Junction.
