Exercise: Are these restricted, precise and unified?
1) Mountaineering can be fun. (not restricted nor precise)
2) Going up a mountain can be challenging, but the right equipment and training can help one get the most out of the sport. (What kind of climbing? What does “get the most out of…” mean?)
3) Mountaineering is a demanding sport; I did a tough climb last winter and I sprained my ankle. (More specific, but what’s the purpose of this essay? How are the two ideas really connected?)
4) I was prepared for a winter climb up Mt. Washington, but when I sprained my ankle during my ascent, I gained a newfound respect for just how tough it can be to summit in sub-zero weather. (Aha, now the topic and purpose are clear. I see the connection between the sport and the injury, too!)
