In chapter three, we go to Gatsby's famous party and Jordan has an exciting and mysterious meeting with Gatsby. Many of you will remember what they talked about and how Nick is pulled into the intrigue. But let's think more about how this chapter differs from the film by looking at a few elements.
A. Directions: You will make a T-Chart on a piece of blank paper. On one side you will record details/passages from the text. On the other side you will draw conclusions. The topic you will explore are the following:
1) Color: Search the chapter for references to color. Draw conclusions on what is suggested by Fitzgerald's use of these colors at the party.
2) Gatsby Himself: Study the passages when Nick--and Fitzgerald--reveal Gatsby to us. What details stand out. What effect does Gatsby seem to have on Nick?
3) Jordan: How does Fitzgerald describe her? (There is a specific adjective he uses more than once; find it and look it up.) How does Nick feel about her? How would you describe their relationships?
4) Nick's Attitudes: Besides going to parties, what has Nick been doing during the summer? Also explore his attitudes about his job, New York City and women in general. What "new" insights does the novel give you into his character?
