Here are a few introductory paragraphs for compare/contrast essays. Which do you find effective and which need help. Be able to articulate your reasons.
The Profits of Female Psychosis
Girl Interrupted and Prozac Nation are two autobiographies which document the descent into psychological affliction and the desperate struggle to find sanity again. These stories demonstrate the extent of human tenacity throughout the most dire of circumstances. The books are written in first person, they are based on the life experiences of Elizabeth Wurtzel of Prozac Nation and Susanna Kaysen of Girl, Interrupted.
Middle School vs. High School
The transition from middle school to high school is one that no one will ever forget. High school is a place where teenagers learn to self regulate and become more independent as opposed to middle school, where the main focus is on learning to harmonize with peers and growing up. Middle school is a time where children become teenagers, start to experience friendships, and learning to deal with certain situations. The middle school is set up to be a place where community and class activities are promoted and encouraged by the faculty. High school is a big transition from the tight knit group in middle school to independence and less structure. The main difference between middle school is the complete alteration in scenery and attitude towards the students. Middle school brings the students together and makes them dependent on one another, but high school emphasizes more independence and individual work. Although there are many differences between eighth grade and ninth grade, there are still some similarities.
Coming out on Top
Even though the congested little pizza place directly across from New London, Sorrento’s, is a lot newer, it shares just as many flaws with it older competitor, New London. New London is the better pizza place for the following reasons: bigger, nicer employees, better subs, and the better meal for your money. However, the two restaurants definitely have their equal share of both positive and negative aspects. New London has been in town a lot longer than Sorrento’s, so its kitchen and tables are more worn and don’t look as appealing as it does when you walk into Sorrento’s. However, when you walk into New London it is a lot bigger and you have a lot more room to sit or stand waiting for your order, which makes it easier for people to overcome the appeal of the older furniture and kitchen. In contrast, Sorrento’s perhaps has a nicer kitchen with a more attractive setup, but the size of it takes away from the atmosphere around you. It is to small for to move about, when there are a lot of people there, and you constantly have to move to another spot or be squished in a corner. The difference with New London, is the larger waiting area that allows you to move around a bit more freely.
Grant and Lee: A Study in Contrasts
When Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee met in the parlor of a modest house at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, on April 9, 1865, to work out the terms for the surrender of Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia, a great chapter on American life came to a close, and a great new chapter began.
These men were bringing the Civil War to its virtual finish. To be sure, other armies had yet to surrender, and for a few days the fugitive Confederate government would struggle desperately and vainly, trying to find some way to go on living now that its chief support was gone. But in effect it was all over when Grant and Lee signed the papers. And the little room where they wrote out the terns was the scene of one of the poignant, dramatic contrasts in American History.
They were two strong men these oddly different generals, and they represented the strengths of two conflicting currents that through them, had come into final collision.
