A= The description will effectively employ 7-9 of the qualities and 6-7 or the techniques
B=The description will effectively employ 6-7 of the qualities and 5-6 or the techniques
C=The description will effectively employ 4-5 of the qualities and 4-5 or the techniques
D=The description will effectively employ fewer than 4 of the qualities and fewer than 4 or the techniques
"Effective" means artful, polished and concise.
A successful character has many of the the following qualities:
- They are vividly described, clothing, physical features
- Quirks or distinct mannerisms (not all characters have to be quirky.)
- The encounter some kind of obstacle or problem that could be internal or external.
- They express motives/desires/goals/drives. These connect to the obstacles and give the reader a sense that something is at stake for the character.
- They might be on some kind of journey, one literal or figurative
- They have a strong, unique personality. Or they simply have a personality that is clearly defined.
- They are relatable (Yes, this is a word!!) The reader can connect with them.
- Like most people, they have likes and dislikes.
- They may have a backstory, but with this particular assignment don't give too much backstory.
A Successful Assignment will employ many of these techniques/Approaches:
- Use descriptive and relevant details. Don't overload your reader.
- Try out some artful repetition if you want.
- Try out at least one figure of speech. (hyperbole, simile, metaphor,etc...)
- Use sensory details to create vivid images in your reader's mind.
- Use a little dialogue to show more about your character.
- Find ways to communicate feelings. Through actions and thoughts that suggest mood.
- Use vivid verbs and apt adjectives. Don't overuse the construction of "IS + ADJECTIVE". (He is tired.)
