Section II: Essay (These are the REAL prompts)
Directions: Write a thoughtful analytical essay on one of the following prompts. Be sure to start with a crisp topic sentence and to support your argument with concrete details.
1. The theme of love/friendship has played a role in many of the texts we’ve read this semester. Develop a thesis statement that provides a theory about the role of love/friendship. Then, using at least two texts to demonstrate your points, analyze how love/friendship shapes characters and affects their conflicts.
2. The idea of civilization or society has played a major role in many of the works we’ve studied this semester. In an essay carefully define the role(s) of society and analyze its affect on two or three characters in the novels you’ve read.
4. This semester we’ve thought deeply about what it means to be an American. In an essay, identify some significant qualities that define us and our nation, and analyze how they shape our experiences in this country.
