Respiration is key to life. All living things need it. See this student-created respiration diagram. If time: watch this 15 minute TED Talk on life in Biosphere 2.
Part 1: Respiration Notes
Write "Respiration Notes" and then all of the following in your journal.
Respiration is:
Breaking down food to release energy or grow.
Enzymes in cells help sugar (C6H12O6) and oxygen (O2) react to release energy, carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O).
Respiration formula:
C6H12O6 + 6O2 ---(uses enzymes to release energy)---> 6CO2 + 6H2O
Other Details:
Matter is conserved (the same number and type of atoms are present on both sides of the formula).
All organisms need to do respiration to live.
See printable scaffolded notes templates here.
Part 2: Respiration Review
Answer the following questions with your group.
1) When your cells break down sugars to get energy it is called ______________
2) The oxygen that your cells breathe in is used to break down _____________.
3) What types of organisms do respiration? __________________
4) What two things, in addition to energy, are given off when respiration occurs? _________________ _______________
5) The formula for cellular respiration is: (Use words and symbols)
________+ _______---(uses _____ to release _______)---> ______+ ________
________+ _______---(uses _____ to release _______)---> ______+ ________
6) What can organisms use the energy they get from respiration for? _________
7) In what cell organelle does respiration take place? __________________
8) What happens to the type and number of atoms during respiration? _____________________
9) What happens to the type and number of molecules during respiration? _____________________
10) Draw a labeled diagram (including organisms) of photosynthesis and cellular respiration.
