You will experiment with melting ice to learn about heat energy. [The investigation will follow the guidelines in the Ice Labs Lesson]
Part 1: First, watch Bill Nye Heat (season 2, episode 10) and complete page 1 of the Ice Labs sheet.
Part 2: Follow the guidelines in the Ice Labs Lesson to melt ice cubes and fill in information on page 2 of the Ice Labs sheet. Optional: Use "Le Freak" or "Ice Ice Baby" to time the 4 minute contest.
Ice Melting Contest Rules:
a. Stay in your seat and keep the ice cube in the bag.
b. You may not put bag under clothing or in mouth.
c. When time is called, remove un-melted ice from bag.
d. Spilled water can't be measured. Broken bag = disqualification
Ice Melting Contest Procedure:
1. Put ice cube into bag.
2. Try to melt as much ice as possible.
3. When time ends, remove unmelted ice from bag and measure water (use cup and cylinder).
4. Answer questions on lab sheet.
Part 3: Follow the guidelines in the Ice Labs Lesson to preserve ice cubes and fill in information on page 2 of the Ice Labs sheet.
Ice Preserving Contest Rules:
a. Stay at your table and work as a table group.
b. Each student needs to complete her/his own lab sheet.
c. Keep ice in bag and insulators in the jug at all times.
d. Broken bag = disqualification
Ice Melting Contest Procedure:
1. Decide on a group plan and do a labeled sketch for #1.
2. Assemble materials per plan and put bagged ice in container.
3. When time ends, remove ice from bag and measure water.
4. Answer the rest of the questions on lab sheet.
Clean Up:
* Clean and dry all bin materials before returning them to bin
* Clean and dry all insulators before returning them to front of room
