Fruit Fly crossing – play VCR video first (need sound)
*read instructions on left (scroll all the way down)
** DO NOT DO THE TABLE WRITING OR JOURNAL EMAIL – JUST LISTEN FOR THE NICE MUSIC TO BE CORRECT AND THEN “RESET” TO GET A NEW SCENARIO TO TRY

Part 2: Webquest
Complete the following webquest and worksheet. Each section below has an associated section of the worksheet to complete.
Go to the following website. Answer the questions as you go through the activity.

Go to the following website.
Pick 1 genetic disorder from the page to learn more about. On your sheet, write the name of the disorder and then write 3 facts that you learned about that disorder. Also write what type of genetic mistake causes the disease such as a recessive or dominant gene or a mistake in a chromosome.

Go to the following website, read the paragraphs, then click "Selective Breeding".

Then, try to selectively breed the best possible corn crop with the following simulation (ask teacher for help if you need help installing software).

Engineer a plant – new style (Transgenic Manipulation, aka genetic engineering)
Go to the following website.
The new way to change crops is transgenic manipulation. The first crop of this kind went into grocery stores in the 1994. Do the activity Transgenic Manipulation and answer the questions:

Genetics Webquest Extension 1: Genetics Online Labs
Go to the following sites. Click on any links that interest you.
Write a summary of what you learned from each site (one paragraph for each).
Then, evaluate each of the two sites. In your evaluation, give your opinion on how appropriate the material from each site would be for the rest of your class, judge the pros and cons of each site, and predict how well students will do with each site (one paragraph for each site).
Then, write a single paragraph with a recommendation for whether both, one or neither of the sites should be used by the full class in the future.
Genetics Webquest Extension 2: Mendel Crosses
TOUGH ONES (won’t be on Quiz/Test, but good challenge):
Be Mendel and cross pea plants with TWO traits!
