States of Matter Demonstrations

Observe the following demonstrations.

Solid:

Procedure

• 1. Using a torch, heat the compound bar.

  2. Observe for a few moments

  3. Record your observations in words and illustrations (drawings) in your journal

  4. Flip the compound bar over and repeat steps 1-3

  5. Demonstrate putting the metal ball through the ring.

  6. Using a torch, heat the metal ball.

  7. Try to put the metal ball through the ring again.

  8. Record your observations in words and illustrations (drawings) in your journal

  9. Let the ball cool for a while and then try to put the metal ball through the ring.

  10. Record your observations in words and illustrations (drawings) in your journal

Liquid:

Procedure

• 1. Fill two vials with water, one with red-colored hot water and one with blue-colored cold water.

  2. Put a playing card on top of the hot water and tip over the hot water on top of the cold with the card between the vials.

  3. Pull out the card, observe and record your observations in words and illustrations (drawings) in your journal.

  4. Repeat steps 2-3 with the blue water on top

Gas:

Procedure

• 1. Fill a cup about 1/3 full with hot water

  2. Dip your finger in the water and use it to dampen the rim of your water bottle and the top of the cap

  3. Place bottle cap UPSIDE DOWN on the bottle so that there are no air leaks

  4. Push the bottle down into the water and hold it

  5. Observe for a few moments

  6. Record your observations in words and illustrations (drawings) in your journal

  7. If you would like to repeat, you must first allow the air inside the bottle to cool (placing it in the cold water bin will accelerate this)

Evaporation:

Procedure

• 1. Fill a container with water

  2. Mark the level on the side of the container

  3. Wait overnight and then mark the level on the side of the container again

  4. Record your observations in words and illustrations (drawings) in your journal

Condensation:

Procedure

• 1. Fill a container with water and ice cubes

  2. Wait for at least 10 minutes and then observe the side of the container

  3. Record your observations in words and illustrations (drawings) in your journal

Melting:

Procedure

• 1. Put a pat of butter in a container.

  2. Microwave it for 10 seconds

  3. Observe the butter

  4. Record your observations in words and illustrations (drawings) in your journal

  5. *** Alternate Procedure***

  6. Put some ice cubes in a container.

  7. Wait for 10-20 minutes

  8. Observe the contents of the container

  9. Record your observations in words and illustrations (drawings) in your journal

Solidification:

Procedure

• 1. Put melted butter that is in liquid state in a container.

  2. Wait for 10 minutes

  3. Observe the butter

  4. Record your observations in words and illustrations (drawings) in your journal
