What is the DNA? (Well, it's the Deoxyribonucleic acid that makes us who we are.) It also makes Spongebob and his family what they are (sort of, watch the Sponge Bob movie to see).
Part 1: DNA Notes and Background Readings
In your journal, copy down the following "DNA Notes."
Trait = a characteristic that can be inherited (passed on from parent to offspring) and/or acquired (learned or gained)
DNA = a molecule that carries genetic information - code to make proteins
Gene = section of DNA that has instructions for a trait
Alleles = the different forms a gene may have for a trait - shown with letters (T=blue tail, t=orange tail) - can be dominant, recessive, or co-dominant.
Chromosome = wound up DNA (Humans have 46, 23 are from each parent)
Protein = molecule that makes up cell parts, muscles, hormones, enzymes...
Mutation = a change in DNA - caused by radiation (like X-rays & UV), certain chemicals, and mistakes in copying
Then, watch the Epigenetics Video (~5 min) for some insights into the new science of epigenetics.
For more detailed information, read the Glencoe DNA Reading (note: unless you want to extend your learning, skip the small section on RNA) and see the Allele Notes.
Part 2: Strawberry DNA
This is a lab to extract DNA from a strawberry.
Follow the guidelines in the Strawberry DNA Slideshow.
Complete the Strawberry DNA assignment sheet.
Teacher notes for setup here. For timers, consider using Strawberry Fields Forever, Strawberry Shortcake Theme, and/or Raspberry Beret.
DNA Extension 1: Evidence from DNA
Read and follow directions in the Genetics Book (pp. D-78 to D-80).
Then, from Genetics Book (pp. D-81 to D-86).
Then, from Genetics Book (pp. D-87 to D-90).
DNA Extension 2: Amoeba Sisters
Watch the Amoeba Sisters DNA episode and complete the Amoeba Sisters worksheet.
DNA Extension 3: DNA Extraction Online Lab
Go to the following site and do the DNA extraction virtual activity:
