How important do you consider the use of TBL projects & integrated language skills instruction in your teaching practice at school?
I believe that using TBL projects and integrated language skills instruction in my teaching practice at school is important and useful. As Rebecca Oxford says, teaching ESL/EFL is like a tapestry. We have to create the class considering the characteristics of the teacher, the learners, the setting, and the language. It is relevant to consider this saying since the use of TBL projects contemplates the characteristics of all the subjects mentioned above. Knowing this, my mindset while creating the classes is better. Jane Willis also talked about exposure. Since I read that I have been trying to speak in English all the time during my classes and making sure that students understand that exposure to the language (videos in English, songs, books, etc.) helps to understand English in a better way. This last point is also related to motivation, another concept that Willis mentions. I, as the teacher, have to make sure that students motivate during the class and participate in the activities and tasks.
Overall, the TBL projects and language skills instruction let me understand more the nature of teaching and how students can learn in a greater and comfortable way.
A reflection on the online teaching experience and the value of it.
I believe that after all of what we have lived during this past couple of years, online teaching has become more and more relevant over time. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, people around the world had to change their way of living, including how they receive their education. I think that before the pandemic, not so many people believed that online teaching was a good idea, but now, after almost two years of online classes, we had to rethink the topic. As a teacher that has done classes on both ways, offline and online, I can say that I prefer offline classes. But that does not mean that online classes do not have their advantages and value. For example, based on my experience, in online classes, you can use more online tools and interactive web pages that the students like. In addition, there are students who are introverts and online classes are more relaxing to them. I see that type of value in this method of teaching.
How your initial preconceptions have changed after this period and your new beliefs regarding your role as assessor and teacher in the current online learning teaching context?
My initial preconceptions were not that pessimistic, but I was nervous about having to give online classes since last year I did not have a good experience with the organization of the school and its online courses. However, the school that I had this year (Liceo Yobilo) achieved all of my expectations and did not trigger any of my negative preconceptions. After this practice, I believe that a teacher has to be prepared for any circumstance, which includes creating online courses and giving online classes to a bunch of students that need constant stimulus and have lots of distractions in their homes.
What advantages and/or disadvantages do you visualize in the supervision process, including the 3 moments- pre-meeting, classroom observation, post-meeting?
In terms of advantages in the supervision process, I think that having a pre-meeting regarding the class was really useful for my lesson. Thanks to the pre-meeting I could fix some mistakes in my planning and change my class for the better. I also liked the post-meeting since I could reflect on myself and what I did during the class as well as talk with my teacher about my performance. Another advantage is recording the classroom observation since I could watch my lesson repeatedly and analyze what I did right, wrong, etc. The only disadvantages that I visualize in the supervision process are the possible technical difficulties during the meetings and the classroom observation.
