The Ceiling
TEMPERA ON CANVAS 40 x 80 cm.
Mele spends most of his life in his home, and most of the day laying in his little bed. He obviously observes everything surrounding him, but he manily watches...the ceiling. He infact represents mainly his daily life in his paintings. the surprising thing, in my opinion, is he offers a new perspective on reality. If you see something which is monotonous or perfectly known with different eyes, you get a strong innovative surprise. the colour of our ceiling is brown with woodden beams and bricks. What caught Mele imagination, and then mine, was not the colour, which is certainly right, but it's not essential, insted it was rithm and regularity. Drawings was made all in the same direction and finger traits are clearly visible, with the most possible precision allowed by Mele's condition, in order to paint the structure of the ceiling. At the beginning I honestly didn't understand what he had painted, but I suddently realized it when i was laying in my bed. When I asked emanuele if he painted the ceiling, he confirmed and he was really happy, he was ethusiastic of being understood!
