Non praevalebunt

TEMPERA ON CANVAS 50 x 70 cm.

FIRST WORK- 28/05/2011

Days ago I listened to a speech on web by Aimee Mullins, a model-athlete without legs. She was saying, in an enlightening and indisputable way, that a disability is a opportunity and not a deficiency. The core of this speech really resonated with me: God takes in order to give. In this woman's case it's clear: she could change her legs, change her height, transparency, she could use her body for photographic and artistic purposes that nobody else could. She found meaning in her infirmity, she became an inspiration for others. What about Emanuele? For months I had been thinking it should be like this for him, too and for everyone....but how could I believe that such a  severe disability was actually a tangible opportunity, not merely a spiritual one? He cannot control his body, he doesn't speak, he's understood, with lots of patience, only by me and a few others. He doesn't eat...basically he can do almost nothing...Dyskinesia, which consists of involuntary and uncontrolled body movements, persecutes him. How could that possibly be an "opportunity"? I had been thinking along these lines till the moment I saw him using COLOURS! A sea of colours that, which slowly and painstakingly, he indicated to me and he spread on the canvas with his random movements. We became coloured! It was an aesthetic-ecstatic experience. Emanuele smiled again and also ate a good amount of paint. This is his finished work. He has never said what it represents...nor in which direction it's supposed to be looked at...The title was chosen from the many proposed by friends.
