Apple Jacks defense carries the day

By Bill Ohm

Captain Joel “Hefty” Affeldt said it best: “This was our best day of defense, ever!”. The Jacks caught ground balls and flyballs, they threw sharply to first base, covered bases and held on to the ball. Probably the best play was on a sharp grounder to third in the first game. Third baseman Scott “Roman” Pechacek went to his knees to stop the ball and then without getting up through a bullet across the infield to nip the striker at first.

In the end, the Apple Jacks outscored the Highland Prairie Hayseeds 10-3 and 7-1. Both games of base ball were played by the rules 1860. The games took place on the grounds of the Highland Prairie Lutheran Church.

Leading the Apple Jacks by reaching base six times were Sam “Roundabout” Deetz, “Roman”, and Dan “Skunk” Deetz. Close behind with five times on base were Mike “Mickey” Jaquette Jason “Weasel” Pericak and Eric “Stretch” Deetz. All other players either reached three or four times.

Playing for the Apple Jacks this day were Conner “Coyote” Knerzer, Sawyer “Stormy’ Knerzer, “Roundabout”, “Roman”, “Weasel”, “Stretch”, “Hefty”, Dave “Crash” Carlson, “Skunk”, Gary “Big Wease” Pericak.

The Apple Jacks finish the season on Saturday, September 17th in La Crescent at Old Hickory Park. Please note that the times have changed for the La Crescent matches. The first game will be at 10:30 AM with two more games at about 90 minute intervals. Admission is free, but bring a lawn chair.
