Apple Jacks Triumph in Spite of Weather

Bill Ohm

On a beautiful, but hot and humid day, the La Crescent Apple Jacks Vintage Base Ball Team drubbed the visiting Highland Prairie Hayseeds at Old Hickory Park last Saturday. The Jacks scored six times in the first inning of the first game and never looked back. But maybe, they should have as the Hayseeds scored four times in the ninth to make it a close game at 10-8.

In the second game La Crescent waited until the second inning before scoring five aces but the Hayseeds came back with six runs in their half of the same inning to take their first lead of the day. That lead was short lived as the Jacks roared back with seven runs in the third. The Hayseeds hung in there until the seventh when the Jacks recorded seven aces. Due to the heat, humidity and forest fire air the second game ended after seven innings with the Apple Jacks ahead 21-10.

Apple Jacks pitchers for the day were Gary "Big Wease" Pericak and Joel "Hefty" Affeldt.

As one can image, there were plenty of hits this day. Paul "Swiss" Geronime again led all players by reaching base eight times for the day. Reaching seven times were Hefty and Samuel "Roundabout" Deetz. Timothy "Louie" Sinniger, John "Rook" Wilke and Jason "Weasel" Pericak reached five times. Four times were Bill "Ho-hum" Ohm, Big Wease and new comer Bob "Two Bit" Spencer. Mike "Mickey" Jaquette reached three times. Playing only in the first game, Kevin "Hurricane" Knerzer reached three times while Connor "Coyote" Knerzer was on twice.

The Apple Jacks will play at Pioneer Power Days in Le Sueur next Saturday. Their opponents will be the Rum River Rovers and the Mankato Baltics.

The Highland Prairie Hayseeds salute the La Crescent Apple Jacks with three "Hurrahs" as umpire Peter "Prince Peter" Petersillie looks on.
