Apple Jacks Have Great Day

Bill Ohm

Last Saturday the Apple Jacks participated in the Menomonie Vintage Base Ball Festival in Menomonie,Wisconsin. There were a total of 10 teams participating, including teams from Chicago, Milwaukee and Topeka.

The Jacks played a couple of familiar adversaries - the Rum River Rovers from the Anoka area and the host Menomonie Blue Caps.

The Rovers owned the day in the first game. Youth and speed defeated the experience of a short handed Apple Jacks team. Playing with several players from another team the Jacks took an early lead and turned three double plays, but fell by a score of 23-3. Enough said.

The second game was much closer. The Jacks again playing with a make shift roster, opened with three runs in the first frame and added one more in each of the following four innings. They also added two more double plays. The Blue Caps, however, tallied aces runs in the fourth inning on their way to an 8-7 victory.

Today's captain, "Big Wease", shared the first game pitching duties with Dan "Skunk" Deetz. In the second game, "Big Wease" shared the pitching duties with "Hammer". "Hammer" was on loan from the Sand Creek 9.

All the Jacks managed to get on base during the two games: Erik "Stretch" Deetz led everybody with six times, John "Rook" Wilkie five times, Jason "Weasel" Pericak and his father "Big Wease" four times each, "Skunk" and Glenn "Hondo" Knowles three times each and Bill "Ho-hum" Ohm twice.

The days matches were summed up by Captain "Big Wease": "It was a great day for base ball. We played two and everyone had a great time".

For their next matches, the Apple Jacks will travel to Afton, Minnesota on Saturday, June 22nd to play the Afton Red Socks and on Sunday, June 23rd will be at Highland Prairie, Minnesota to play the Highland Prairie Hayseeds.
