Apple Jacks thresh Roosters

By Bill Ohm

The most recent matches for the Apple Jacks Vintage Base Ball Club of La Crescent took place at the Olmsted County Historical Center during the Days of Yesteryear celebration presented by the Mechanical History Round Table of Rochester. Their opponent was the Rooster Vintage Base Ball Club of Olmsted County. When the dust settled (or was it oat chaff from the threshing process?) the Jacks won 9-7 and 15-12. The first game was shortened to six innings to allow both teams to ride in the day’s parade.

The Apple Jacks opened the first game with an ace in the first inning but, were quickly overtaken by the Roosters’ five aces in the second. After five innings the score was 7-7. The Jacks scored two aces in the bottom of the sixth to clinch the victory.

While the Jacks opened the second game with four aces in the first two innings, the Roosters game back to tie the game at 6-6 after three innings. It was 7-7 after four and 9-8 Apple Jacks after six. The Apple Jacks’ five aces in the seventh and one in the ninth out did the Roosters’ four aces in the eighth.

Scott “Roman “ Pechacek again led the team by reaching base nine times. Jon “Numbers” Jones and Willis “Mouse” Jones were each on seven times. Everyone that played both games reached base at least four times.

Participants were Joel “Hefty” Affeldt, Dave “Crash” Carlson, Randal “Spud” Flamm, Mike “Mickey” Jaquette, “Numbers”, “Mouse”, Kevin “Hurricane” Knerzer, rookie Sawyer “ Stormy” Knerzer, “Roman” and Gary “Big Wease” Pericak. Tally keeper was Joan “Lady Joan” Ohm and team photographer was Lisa Jones.

The Apple Jacks play in Winona on August 20th where they will play one game by the rules of 1860 and one game by today’s rules. They close the month of August on the 27th at St. Charles.
