Apple Jacks Stymied at Highland Prairie

Bill Ohm

Playing at the Apple Jacks favorite road venue did not help matters Sunday, September 9th. The beautiful field at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church was not a step into the win column. In the first game pitcher's duel, the Jacks lost to the host Highland Prairie Hayseeds by a score of three aces to one. The 'Seeds managed one run in the first inning and two in the last to spoil a fine pitching performance by Gary "Big Wease" Pericak. He was backed up by a fine defensive effort.

The second game provided a little more action as the Jacks faced the Driftless Dodgers of Decorah for the very first time. However, the Dodgers prevailed by a score of 7-3. Big Wease pitched this half of the doubleheader also. Again, the Jacks defense was superb.

All the Jacks successfully reached base at least once. They were led by Paul "Swiss" Geronime who was on six times. Reaching base four times were Mike "Mickey" Jaquette, Bill "Ho-hum" Ohm and Scott "Roman" Pechacek. Samuel "Roundabout" Deetz, Big Wease, Dan "Skunk" Deetz and Joel "Hefty" Affeldt reached three times. On base twice was Kevin "Hurricane" Knerzer. Also reaching base was "Jim "Scoop" Schupbach.

The Apple Jacks will wrap up their season on Saturday, September 15th in La Crescent at Old Hickory Park. They will again take on the Highland Prairie Hayseeds and also the Roosters of Olmsted County.
