Apple Jacks

By Bill “Ho Hum” Ohm

It was a beautiful weekend for base ball. We should play four. So we did! Two games in Stillwater on Saturday and two games in Rochester on Sunday.

Playing base ball by the rules of 1860, the Apple Jacks scored an increasing amount of runs in each game played. Sadly, that did not result in any victories. The Jacks started Saturday with three runs but could not match the Afton Red Socks’ five runs. The Jacks improved to four runs in game two but were outscored 10-4 by the Menomonie/Sand Creek combined team. Moving on to Rochester the local nine posted 11 runs in the first game but fell to the Mankato Baltics 19-11. Ramping up all the way, the Jacks earned 18 aces in the nightcap but could only salvage a tie with the Quicksteps of Minneapolis.

A highlight of the day in Rochester was the reenactment of the Civil War battle of Wilson Creek which took place on August 10, 1861 near Springfield, Missouri. Our games took place before and after the battle. One of the reinanactors, representing the 2nd Wisconsin Regiment was the Apple Jacks own Jared “Bear” Alexander.

Participants in one or more games were: Joel “Hefty” Affeldt, Dan “Skunk” Deetz, Erik “Stretch” Deetz, Samuel “Roundabout” Deetz, Brian “Moose” Deutsch, Steve “Biscuit” Geronime, Mike “Hawkeye” Haupert, Mike “Mickey“ Jaquette, Kevin “Hurricane” Knerzer, Gary “Big Wease” Pericak, Bob “Two Bit” Spencer, Nick Storlie, and John “Rook” Wilke. Joan “Lady Joan” Ohm served as Tally Keeper.

The Jacks will be in Rushford on August 7th and Rochester on Aug 14th

The current Jack’s roster ranges from high schoolers to those who are well past retirement age. We even have a woman on the team. We have five fathers playing with their eight sons. If you are looking for a fun and educational time, please call Captain Joel “Hefty” Affeldt at 608-769-1782 or Bill “Ho Hum” Ohm at 507-895-6912 or ohm@acegroup.cc . A great opportunity to make new friends and to travel Minnesota and beyond!

The Apple Jacks Base Ball Club is a community outreach program of the La Crescent Historical Society. Merchants Bank of La Crescent is a major sponsor.
