Apple Jacks Play in Stillwater

Steve Geronime

Saturday, July 21st found the La Crescent Apple Jacks traveling northward to Minnesota's birthplace. Two worthy opponents awaited the Jacks in Stillwater.

Game one found the underdog Apple Jacks against the formidable Rum River Rovers. The Jacks were undermanned due to injuries and a horseless carriage breakdown that caused Captain Joel "Hefty" Affeldt to turn back towards La Crescent. Unfortunately, his carriage contained the Apple Jacks' bats, balls and uniforms. Interim managers, Dan "Skunk" Deetz and Steve "Whitey" Geronime, quickly recruited available players from the Afton Red Socks to fill out the roster. The blended team performed well and only came up one tally short of the Rovers losing 5-4.

The second game was equally spirited. The adversary this time was the host club, St. Croix Base Ball Club of Stillwater. Players from the Red Socks and Quicksteps teams helped bolster the Apple Jacks lineup. However, by the same score as game one, the Jacks again lost 5-4.

Family connections were very evident amongst the Apple Jacks. Skunk, Erik "Stretch" and Samuel "Roundabout" represented the Deetz family. Another family represented included brothers-in-law Whitey and John "Rook" Wilkie along with Rook's son-in-law Brian "Moose" Deutsch.

The Apple Jacks hope to return to their winning ways on Saturday, August 11th in Rochester against the Roosters of Olmsted County.

If you would like to join the Apple jacks on the field, kindly call Captain Joel "Hefty" Affeldt at 608-769-1782 or Captain Emeritus Bill "Ho-hum" Ohm at 507-895-6912 for more details.
