On a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Old Hickory Park in La Crescent, the Apple Jacks opened their 15th season against the Roosters of Olmsted County.

In the double header, the Jacks scored a total of six aces in the two 9th innings. Unfortunately, they only scored four aces in all the other innings combined. And the Roosters managed 24 aces for the day.

The Roosters team, supplemented by players from Red Wing, Highland Prairie and Decorah, won the opener 9-4 and the second match 15-6.

The Apple Jacks highlight of the day was Jason “Weasel” Pericak’s three run homer in the bottom of the ninth of the second game.

Almost as momentous, was umpire Peter “Prince Peter” Petersilie’s fining of unruly spectator Leo Chaput. Several dollars were collected in the fine bucket at the rate of 25 cents a pop.

On the field, the Jacks were led by Mike “Mickey” Jaquette who reached base four times and scored three aces. Also reaching base four times were Weasel, Joel “Hefty” Affeldt and Jim “Red” Johnson. Paul “Swiss” Geronime, Samuel “Roundabout” Deetz and “Kevin “Hurricane” Knerzer reached three times.

Gary “Big Wease” Pericak reached twice and Tim “Louie” Sinniger, Bill, Ho-hum” Ohm and Jim “Scoop” Schupbach each reached base once.

Hefty and Big Wease pitched alternate innings in the first game and were joined by Ho-hum in the nightcap.

Joan “Lady Joan” Ohm did her usual fine job of tallying the aces the Apple Jacks produced.

On June 9, the Apple Jacks will host the St. Croix Base Ball Club of Stillwater for a double header at Old Hickory Park. The first game will start at Noon.

If you would like to join the Apple Jacks on the field, kindly call Captain Joel “Hefty” Affeldt at 608-769-1782 or Captain Emeritus Bill “Ho-hum” Ohm at 507-895-6912 for more details.
