Apple Jacks take on the Milwaukee Grays

On a gray, but hot, day in Rushford, Minnesota, the Apple Jacks Base Ball Club of La Crescent faced the Milwaukee Grays. It was quite a slugfest with the Jacks emerging victorious with a 20-13 score.

Playing by the rules of 1860, the Jacks scored six runs in the top of the first and never looked back. Pesky Milwaukee scored in the first, fourth, fifth, sixth, eight and ninth innings but could never catch up. After the first inning the Apple Jacks scored four in the third, two in the fourth, one in sixth, four in the seventh and three in the ninth.

Scott “Roman “ Pechacek led the team be reaching base five times. Samuel “Roundabout” Deetz was on base four times. All but one of the remailing players reached base safely three times.

Participants were Joel “Hefty” Affeldt, Dan “Skunk” Deetz, Erik “Stretch” Deetz, “Roundabout”, Randal “Spud” Flamm, Mike “Mickey” Jaquette, Elizabeth “Arrow” Jensen, “Roman”, Gary “Big Wease” Pericak, and Jason “Weasel” Pericak. Each team was joined by two players from the Mankato Baltics. The Baltics were originally scheduled to play, but did not participate as a team. Tally keeper was Joan “Lady Joan” Ohm and team photographer was Bill Ohm.

In the second game of the day, the Fillmore Fungi defeated Milwaukee 11-10. The last game between the Fungi and Apple Jacks was cancelled due to rain.

The Apple Jacks next matches are at Rochester on August 13th. August 20th will find them at Winona where they will play one game by the rules of 1860 and one game by today’s rules. They close the month on August 27th at St. Charles.
