Apple Jacks Win Two on Opening Day

By Bill Ohm

By identical scores of 9-4, the Apple Jacks Vintage Base Ball Club of La Crescent defeated the Roosters of Olmsted County in the first two games of the season. The games were played at Old Hickory Park on a beautiful, but cool, day. The Jacks had their hitting clothes on. Led by Conner “Coyote” Knerzer’s triple in the first game and his home run in the second game, 26 Jacks reached base in the first game and 28 in the second. The victories made up for last year’s opening day loss to the Roosters.

The only low light of the day was the injury sustained to the hand of Scott “Roman” Pechacek. The finger appears to have been broken during the spirited play of the day.

Participants were “Coyote", “Roman”, Eric “Stretch” Deetz, Mike “Mickey” Jaquette, Kevin “Hurricane” Knerzer, Dan “Skunk” Deetz, Joel “Hefty” Affeldt, Gary “Big Wease” Pericak, Dave “Crash” Carlson, Randall “Spud” Flamm, Bob “Two Bit” Spencer, Jared “Bear” Alexander and Sawyer “Soy Sauce” Knerzer. The team photographer was Cynda Solberg, Tally keeper was Becky Deetz.

The next game for the Jacks is in Wykoff MN at the Dream Acres Farm at 6 PM, Friday, June 10th. They return to La Crescent on June 11th to play the Northfield Silver Stars and Fillmore Fungi starting at noon at Old Hickory Park.

Ball players from high school to beyond retirement age (male or female) are welcome to play. If you are interested in experiencing base ball as it was meant to be played, please call Captain Joel "Hefty" Affeldt at 608-769-1782 or Manager Bill "Ho Hum" Ohm at 507-895-6912.

Stretch is about to get on base for the 6th time. Jacks await their turn to strike.
