The very acidic, tart fruit is edible and used in Asian and Latin American cooking.
The leaves are have been used in various herbal remedies for itches, swellings of mumps and rheumatism, skin eruptions, bites of poisonous creatures, venereal disease, rectal inflammation, coughs and is taken after childbirth as a tonic.
A flower infusion is said to be effective against coughs and thrush.
