(The Middle Legendary Kings)
Kaika Wakayamatoneko Hikoōbibi no Mikoto, Ninth Emperor of Japan and Great King of Yamato. He ruled from the Palace of Izakawa in Kasuga. He married (first) Taniwa no Takanuhime, daughter of Taniwa no Yugori the Great Agata-Nushi of Taniwa. He married (second) his step-mother, Igakashikome no Mikoto, his Empress, daughter of Utsushikoo no Mikoto, ancestor of the Omi of Hozumi or Ōhesoki no Mikoto, Ancesetor of the Mononobe Clan. He married (third) Oketsuhime no Mikoto, younger sister of Hikokunioketsu no Mikoto, ancestor of the Omi of Wani. He married (fourth) Washihime, daughter of Kazuraki no Tarumi. He died at the age of 63 (Kojiki) or 115 (Nihonshiki) years and was buried in Sakamoto at Izakawa in Kasuga. He had issue:
1) Hikoyumusumi no Mikoto, also called Hikokomosu no Mikoto (son of Takanuhime). He had issue:
a) Ōtsutsukitarine no Miko. He had issue, including:
i) Kaguyahime no Mikoto. She married Suinen, Eleventh Emperor of Japan and had issue - see below.
b) Sanugitarine no Miko. He had female issue.
2) Sujin Mimakiribikoinie no Mikoto, Tenth Emperor of Japan (son of Igakashikome) - see below.
3) Hikoimasu no Miko (son of Oketsuhime). He was sent by the Tenth Emperor to Taniwa to slay Kugamimi no Mikasa. He married (first) Yamashiro no Enatsuhime, also called Karibatatobe. He married (second) Kasuga no Saho no Ōkuramitome, daughter of Takekunikatsutome. He married (third) Okinaga no Mizuyorihime, daughter of Ame no Mikage no Kami, a god worshipped at Mikami in Chikatsuafumi. He married (fourth) his maternal aunt Oketsuhime, daughter of Hikokunioketsu no Mikoto, ancestor of the Omi of Wani. He had issue:
a) Ōmata no Miko (son of Enatsuhime). He had issue:
i) Aketatsu no Miko, also called Yamatooyushikitomitomitoyoasakuraaketatsu. Diviner for Emperor Suinen, he helped make and offering to Ōkuninushi in Izumo in order to cure the Emperor's son's dumbness. He was ancestor of the Lords of the Homuji Clan of Ise and the Agatanushi of Sana in Ise.
ii) Unakami no Miko, he founded a Shrine to Ōkuninushi in Izumo and was ancestor of the Lords of Himeda.
b) Omata no Miko (son of Enatsuhime), ancestor of the Lords of Magari in Tagima.
c) Shibumi no Sukune no Miko (son of Enatsuhime), ancestor of the Lords of Sasa.
d) Sahobiko no Miko (son of Saho no Ōkuramitome), ancestor of the Muraji of the Kusaka Clan and of the Miyatsuko of Kai Province. He conspired against Emperor Suinen with his sister Sahajibime (the Emperor's wife), but she confessed to Suinen. The Emperor beseiged and killed him. He had issue:
i) A son, who had issue:
(1) A son, who had issue:
(a) Hadane no Mikoto. He debauched a lady-in-waiting in the reign of Emperor Yuryaku and was fined for his misdeed.
e) Ozaho no Miko (son of Saho no Ōkuramitome), ancestor of the Wakes of Kazunu and of Kanu in Chikatsuafumi.
f) Murobiko no Miko (son of Saho no Ōkuramitome), ancestor of the Wake of Mimi in Wakasa.
g) Tatatsumichi no Ushi no Miko, Prince of Taniwa (son of Mizuyorihime). He married Taniwa no Kawakami no Masu no Iratsume and had issue:
i) Mikadowake no Miko, ancestor of the Wake of Ho in Mikawa.
i) Hibasuhime no Mikoto. She married the Suinen, Eleventh Emperor of Japan and had issue - see below.
ii) Matonuhime no Mikoto, also called Takanohime. She was to marry Suinen, but he sent her away on account of her ugliness and she attempted to hang herself at Sagaraka and succeeded in drowning herself at Otokuni.
iii) Nubata no Iribime no Mikoto, perhaps also called Otohime no Mikoto. She married the Suinen, Eleventh Emperor of Japan and had issue - see below.
iv) Azami no Iribime no Mikoto. perhaps also called Otohime no Mikoto. She married Suinen, Eleventh Emperor of Japan and had issue - see below.
g) Mizuho no Mawaka no Miko (son of Mizuyorihime), ancestor of the Atahe of Yasu in Chikatsuafumi.
h) Kamuōne no Miko, also called Yatsuriiribiko no Miko (son of Mizuyorihime), ancestor of the Miyatsukos of Minu and Motosu provinces and the Muraji of the Nagahata Clan. He had issue, including:
i) Ehime. She married Ōusu no Mikoto, son of the Twelfth Emperor, who had been sent to engage her to his father. She had issue - see below.
ii) Otohime. She married Ōusu no Mikoto, son of the Twelfth Emperor, who had been sent to engage her to his father. She had issue - see below.
i) Yamashiro no Ōtsutsuki no Mawaka no Miko (son of Oketsuhime). He married his neice Mone no Ajisahahime and had issue:
i) Kamimeikazuci no Miko. He married Takakihime, daughter of the Taniwa no Tōtsu, Omi of Taniwa, and had issue:
(1) Okinaga no Sukune no Miko. He married (first) Kazuraki no Takanukahime, supposedly a fifth generation descendant of an unnamed King of Silla, in Southern Korea. He married (second) Kawamata no Inayorihime. He had issue:
(a) Okinagahiko no Miko (son of Takanukahime), ancestor of the Lords of Homuji in Kibi and Aso in Harima.
(b) Ōtamasaka no Miko (son of Inayorihime), ancestor of the Miyazuko of Tajima Province.
(a) Jin-gō Kōgō Okinagatarashihime no Mikoto (daughter of Takanukahime), she married Chūai, Fourteenth Emperor of Japan, and ruled the Empire as Regent for his unborn son after his death. She had issue - see below.
(b) Soratsuhime no Mikoto (daughter of Takanukahime)
j) Hikoosu no Miko (son of Oketsuhime)
k) Irine no Miko (son of Oketsuhime)
i) Mone no Ajisahahime. She married her uncle, Yamashiro no Ōtsutsuki no Mawaka no Miko - see above.
a) Sahobime, also called Sahajihime no Mikoto. (daughter of Saho no Ōkuramitome). She married her cousin, Suinen, Eleventh Emperor of Japan and had issue - see below. She was called on by her brother Sahobiko to assassinate Suinen, but could not bring herself to do the deed, and revealed the conspiracy. She could not bring herself to abandon her brother, either, went with him while he was beseiged and was killed by Suinen.

4) Taketayohazurawake no Miko (son of Washihime), ancestor of the Omi of Chimori, the Agatanushis of the Oshinumi, Mima and Oshinumi in Inaba Clans and the Atahes of Takanu in Taniba and the Abiko of Yosami
1) Mimatsuhime no Mikoto (daughter of Igakashikome)
Sujin Mimakiribikoinie no Mikoto, Tenth Emperor of Japan and Great King of Yamato. He ruled from the Palace of Mizugaki in Shiki. He is called the First Land Ruling Emperor and his the first reign for which stories are recorded; he averted a great plague or rebellion by appointing a High Priest to worship Ōmononushi no Kami, sent forces to pacify Koshi and the East, prevented an uncle's plot to overthrow him, built many ships, acquired the Imperial Regalia from Izumo and was the first Emperor to collect taxes. He married (first) Tōtsu no Ayume Mekuhashibime, daughter of Ki no Arakahatobe, Miyatsuko of Ki Province. He married (second) Owari no Ōamahime, also called Yasakafuruamairohe, ancestor of the Muraji of Ōri. He married (third) his first cousin, Mimatsuhime no Mikoto, Empress, daughter of Ōbiko no Mikoto. He died at the age of 168 (Kojiki) or 120 (Nihonshoki) years and was buried in a Kofun in Yamato on Yamanobe Road. He had issue:
1) Toyosuki Iribiko no Mikoto (son of Mekuhashi). His father made him ruler of the "Eastern Land" and was ancestor of the Lords of Kamitsukenu and Shimotsukenu.
2) Ōiriki no Mikoto (son of Ōamahime), ancestor of the Omi of Noto.
3) Yasaka no Iribiko no Mikoto (son of Ōamahime)
a) Yasaka no Iribime no Mikoto. She married Keikō, Twelfth Emperor of Japan and had issue - see below.
4) Suinen Ikume Iribikoisachi no Mikoto, Eleventh Emperor of Japan (son of Mimatsuhime) - see below.
5) Iza no Mawaka no Mikoto, also called Ikatsuruhiko no Mikoto (son of Mimatsuhime)
6) Yamatohiko no Mikoto (son of Mimatsuhime), either the first (according to the Kojiki) or last (according to the Nihonshiki) person in Japan have his servants buried alive with him when he was interred.
1) Toyosuki Iribime no Mikoto (daughter of Mekuhashi), High Priestess of Amaterasu.
2) Nunaki no Iribime no Mikoto (daughter of Ōamahime)
3) Toochi no Iribime (daughter of Ōamahime)
4) Kunikatahime no Mikoto (daughter of Mimatsuhime)

Suinen Ikume Iribikoisachi no Mikoto, Eleventh Emperor of Japan and Great King of Yamato. He ruled from the Palace of Tamakaki in Shiki or Makimuku. His reign was the first in which Japan interacted with Korea, befriending northern states but making an enemy of the Southern kingdom of Silla. He dispatched an envoy to retrieve an orange of eternal life from the West, but he died before the envoy returned. He married (first) his first cousin Sahobime, also called Sahajihime no Mikoto, Empress, daughter of Hikoimasu no Miko, she was called on by her brother Sahobiko to assassinate Suinen, but could not bring herself to do the deed, and revealed the conspiracy; she could not bring herself to abandon her brother, either, went with him while he was beseiged and was killed by Suinen (see above). After his first wife's death, he married (second) Hibasuhime no Mikoto, Empress, daughter of Tatatsumichi no Ushi no Miko, Prince of Taniwa, and descendant of Kaika, Ninth Emperor of Japan (see above) she was buried at Terama near Saki and the first to be buried in a stone-coffin. He married (third) Nubata no Iribime no Mikoto, sister of his second wife. He married (fourth) Azami no Iribime, sister of the previous wives. He married (fifth) Kaguyahime no Mikoto, daughter of Ōtsutsukitarine no Miko, and descendant of Kaika, Ninth Emperor of Japan (see above). He married (sixth) Karibatatobe, daughter of Fuchi from Ōkuni in Yamashiro. He married (seventh) Otokaribatatobe, sister of his sixth wife. He died at the age of 153 years and was buried at Mitachi in Sugahara. He had issue:
1) Homotsuwake no Mikoto (son of Shajihime). He was born while his mother was beseiged for her treachery. He was dumb until he went to Izumo and made an offering to Ōkuninushi. He thereafter dwelt at Nagaho in Ajimasa. He married Hinagahime, but discovered her to be a snake and fled.
2) Inishiki no Iribiko no Mikoto (son of Hibasuhime). He lived at the Palace of Kawakami in Totori and dug Lake Chinu, Lake Sayama and Lake Takatsu at Kusake. He donated a thousand swords as an offering to Isonokami Shrine and thereafter lived at that Shrine. He was ancestor of the Kawakami Clan.
3) Keikō Ōtarashihiko Oshirowake no Mikoto, Twelfth Emperor of Japan (son of Hibasuhime) - see below.
4) Ōnakatsuhiko no Mikoto (son of Hibasuhime) was the ancestor of the Wakes of Yamanobe, the Sakikusa, Inaki, Ada, Minui in Ohari Province, Ihanashi in Kibi, Koromo, Takasuka and Mure and the Lords of Asuka.
5) Wakaki no Iribiko no Mikoto (son of Hibasuhime)
6) Nutarashiwake no Mikoto (son of Nubata)
7) Igatarashihiko no Mikoto (son of Nubata)
8) Ikobayawake no Mikoto (son of Azami)

10) Ochiwake no Miko (son of Karibatatobe) was the ancesor of the Mountain Lord of Otsuki and the Lord of Koromo in Mikawa,
11) Ikatarashihiko no Miko (son of Karibatatobe) was the ancestor of the Mountain Lord of Kasuga and the Lords of Ishida and of Kasugahe and Ike in Koshi.
12) Itoshiwake no Miko, also called Itakewake no Mikoto (son of Karibatatobe). He had no children, but was ancestor of the Itoshi Clan by adoption.
13) Ihatsukuwake no Miko (son of Otokaribatatobe) was the ancestor of the Lords of Haguchi and Mio.

1. Furuhime. She married Hikonushibito no Miko, a descendant of Emperor Ojin and had issue, including Emperor Keitai, and is therefore the ancestress of all later Japanese Emperors.
1) Yamatohime no Mikoto (daughter of Hibasuhime). High Priestess of Amaterasu and founder of her Great Shrine at Ise, she aided her nephew, Yamatotake, in his travels and lived for hundreds of years.
2) Azamihime no Mikoto, also called Wakaasatsuhime (daughter of Azami). She married Inasebiko no Miko.
3) Ihatsukuhime no Mikoto, also called Futaji no Iribime no Mikoto (daughter of Otokaribatatobe). She married her nephew, the great hero Yamatotakeru no Mikoto, son and Crown Prince of Emperor Keikō - see below.
