ZHOU GENEALOGY

(Eastern Zhou Dynasty)

771 – 720 Zhōu Píng-wáng Jī Yíjiù, Thirteenth Emperor of Zhou. He was heir to his father’s throne, but was deposed in favour of his newborn brother in 779. However, in 771, when his maternal grandfather sacked the capital and killed his father, he was made Emperor, so that official sacrifices could continue. He moved the capital east to Luoyang, to protect Zhou from further nomadic incursions. He died in 720, but had issue:

720 – 697 Zhōu Huán-wáng Jī Lín, Fourteenth Emperor of Zhou. He lost control of the State of Zhèng, and was defeated when he attempted to recapture it in 707. He married as a concubine Jī. He died in 697, but left issue:

697 – 682 Zhōu Zhuāng-wáng Jī Tuó, Fifteenth Emperor of Zhou. He defeated a conspiracy by the Duke of Zhōu and died in 682. He had issue:

682 – 677 Zhōu Xī-wáng Jī Húqí, Sixteenth Emperor of Zhou. By his time China had dissolved into a multitude of States, only nominally subject to the Emperor, who was no longer even the most powerful figure in China (that was Duke Huán of the State of Qí). He died in 677, but left issue:

677 – 675 Zhōu Huì-wáng Jī Làng, Seventeenth Emperor of Zhou. He was overthrown in 675 by the States of Wei and Yen and restored in 673 by the States of Zhèng and Guó. In 672 he acknowledged Duke Huán of the State of Qí as Hegemon of China. He married Huì. He died in 652, but had issue:

675 – 673 Jī Tuí, Eighteenth Emperor of Zhou. His vassals overthrew the Seventeenth Emperor of Zhou and placed him on the throne as a puppet. He was overthrown and killed in 673 by the States of Zhèng and Guó.

673 – 652 Zhōu Huì-wáng Jī Làng, Seventeenth Emperor of Zhou (Restored).

652 – 636 Zhōu Xiāng-wáng Jī Zhèng, Nineteenth Emperor of Zhou. He prevented a revolt by his brother, punished the State of Cheng with the help of the Dí nomads. He married a lady of the Dí, but later dismissed her, leading the Dí to invade and replace him with his brother. He fled to Cheng, only to be reinstated in 635 by the States of Jin and Qin. The Duke of Qin became Hegemon of China and treated the Emperor as one of his vassals. He died in 619, but had issue:

636 – 635 Jī Shū-Dài, Twentieth Emperor of Zhou. Born in 672, he plotted against the Nineteenth Emperor in 649, but was discovered and fled to the Hegemon in the State of Qí. He was rehabilitated in 640, but in 635 the invading Dí nomads overthrew his brother and made him Emperor. He married the lady of the Dí, who had been married to the Nineteenth Emperor and based himself at Wēn. He was killed in 635 by the forces of the States of Jin and Qin.

607 – 586 Zhōu Dìng-wáng Jī Yú, Twenty-Third Emperor of Zhou. In his reign, the State of Cheng was destroyed and the State of Chu arose as a great power. He died in 586, but had issue:

520 – 516 Zhōu Dào-wáng Jī Zǐ-cháo, Twenty-Eighth Emperor of Zhou. He was his father’s preferred successor, and killed his brother in order to become Emperor in 520. He was overthrown by his brother, the Twenty-Ninth Emperor, who was the preferred candidate of the Qin in 516. He briefly regained the throne in 504, but the Qin dethroned him in 503.

520 – 504 Zhōu Jìng-wáng Jī Gài, Twenty-Ninth Emperor of Zhou. He was the State of Qin’s preferred candidate for Emperor and with their help he became Emperor in 520, but he was not able to recapture the Capital from his brother in 516. His brother drove him out of the capital in 504, but he recaptured it with the help of the Qin. He died in 478 or, more probably, 477. He had issue:
