644 - 656 Abū `Abdillāh Abū `Amr `Uthmān Thun-Nurayn ibn `Affān al-Umawī, Commander of the Faithful and Third Rashidun Caliph. Born 574 at Ta'if, Hejaz into the Umayyad family, which dominated Mecca in the years before Islam and was extremely hostile to the Prophet. `Uthmān was nevertheless an early convert to Islam and a close companion of the Prophet, serving as his Secretary for religious matters. This sparked the First Fitna or civil war in Islam. He married (second) Umm Kulthūm bint Muḥammad al-Hashemī, a full sister of the previous, who had divorced `Utaybah ibn Abī Lahab al-Hashemi, a first cousin of the Prophet and opponent of Islam. He married (third) Fākhitah bint Ghazwān. He married (fourth) Umm `Amr bint Jandab al-Azdī. He married (fifth) Fātimah bint al-Walīd al-Makhzūmī. He married (sixth) Umm Banīn bint 'Uyaynah al-Fazārī.
