In this Parsha, Moses tries multiple times to change Pharaoh’s mind. Moses goes back to Pharaoh over and over again, new tactics (ie: plagues) in tow. Are we challenging ourselves to adapt our tactics to new issues we see in our Jewish community? Are we utilizing the networks and creativity of our movement members to amplify our voice? Perhaps we could organize rallies, create poster or media campaigns, reach out to new demographics (college-aged Jews, Palestinain-Americans, adults). Let’s be more creative about how we strive for change!
As we move into this new semester and season, I want us all to honestly examine our Jewish communities and our movement. We as Jews are part of the problem but we as Habonim Dror can and must become part of the solution. What will happen if we do not take a more direct and front seat role in affecting change? In my worst (and frequent) nightmares I see a future of increased hostility against Jewish communities globally, a continued and worsening oppression of Palestinian people and a growing shame around being part of the Jewish people.
Together, with creativity and confidence may we be like Moses and help our community arise from Pharaoh’s oppression. Together, may we actualize on our vision of peace, equality and freedom.
