Groceries always come out more expensive than I had in mind and then I forget a number of ingredients and I have to go back and take too much with me. These tips are useful for me when this happens. I re-learned some of these tips during my grocery shopping course (Course is in Dutch) at Porterenee.
By deciding in advance what I am going to eat, I only get the products I need from the supermarket that are necessary for my meals that week. I no longer have to decide what to eat in the store and take things with me for more than I can eat in a week. I can save even more by connecting the menus to each other during the week, so that I can use ingredients left over from one meal for another.
By having a shopping list and sticking to it, I can control spending on groceries. Also take a look at what I already have at home and don't put that on my shopping list. I am not tempted to buy other things that are not on my list. I put some tasty things on my list so I don't feel tempted in the store to buy something that is not on my list. Once I've picked up something that's not on my list, I think Auch at the cash register.
The less time I spend in the supermarket, the less I am tempted to buy more. Pick a day and go with my list and buy everything I need.
Leave the A-brands and choose a good alternative private label (huismerk) if possible. This saves a lot of money. A-brands are often at eye level, but if I look down or up, I see the private labels and they are often just as good, but cheaper. Sometimes they even come from the same factory.
When I am hungry or hungry, I buy whatever seems good, because my stomach tells me that I need it. I don't need them at all. Eat something and then go shopping. Also leave kids at home, because they often want something that is not on the shopping list, so more money is spent than budgeted.
If I have leftover food, I can easily eat it another day, so keep it. It is delicious for lunch or sometimes I can freeze it. So storing leftovers doesn't have to mean eating the same thing for three days.
I had no idea how big my shopping budget should be, NIBUD has guidelines that I can try out to see what my shopping budget should be. I looked at their budget guideline and determined for myself that I have a week budget of 49 euros for groceries including small groceries such as bottles of water or cola on the way and lunch. Although my student debt is now zero and I have no other debts I wil still follow these 7 tips.
