I petrified... A conflict erupted in me... I felt like I couldn't leave him there but at the same time I was feeling more and more afraid of staying around that place. I can only imagine the multiple ways that dirt could swallow us whole. Still feeling frighten I tried to shake it off as I looked to the rubble ground below and step by step approached him. Grabbing the improvised hammer still laying around I tried to loose the rock by slowly chipping it. With every hit I felt the angry stirring beneath and I felt like the situation would get worst at any moment, but instead, the rock cracked and he was able to scratch loose his foot.
We immediately started to climb down that dreadful place at the same time more sounds came from the land.
The lady and her child was already down on what's left of the streets cheering for us. It's nice to be appreciated, even from people whom we don't know... As we meet again we all asked in unison.
- Are you alright?
We looked at each other in approvement and then just laughed at the synchronism that occurred.
Joe was scratched but nothing to worry about, I was still grased from yesterday's meteor incident but no problem there and the mother and daughter were freed. If I were to guess, I'd say that they were stuck in that elevator since yesterday's events.
The area we're in, is mostly just rubble and dirt but we have to get back to the bunker and the road to it doesn't have a pleasant sight, specially for a child.
I turn to Joe and signal him for a cookie for the kid but he replied with a negative expression. Understanding that it was my intention to distract the little girl from what was coming, he abruptly decided to go ahead...
- Oh.. ahhmmm... I'll go ahead and warn the others to make arrangements to two more. - Turning to me, he continued... - Just take them there calmly!
- Understood! - I replied promptly as he took off...
- You don't have to... - I stopped her as a look at the little girl.
- Don't worry, he probably knows what he's doing... - I joked! - The road ahead is a bit bumpy do you want me to pick you up and take you there on my back?
- No. - The little girl decided... - I'm a big girl and am strong!
- Okay, but the view is better on my shoulders and you could sleep a bit!
- I'm not tired. I'm not a kid anymore.
She was... Probably spent the whole night up!
- Let's rest in that bench! - I suggested. - We grown-ups need to rest more!
Understanding my plan, the mother help to make the child agreed. As we sit, I sigh...
- Ah... Boy was I tired!...
Aside from smiles, nothing was replied, so I continued...
