Jidokan Project

We volunteer the 2nd Saturday of the month at the Kusanagi Jidokan (children's center). http://kusanagi.shizuoka-jidokan.jp/

About 20-25 elementary school children are part of a "Game Club."

We play lots of different board and card games. We also do some game design activities. We are interested in children's social and academic development. If you scroll down, you can see which games we like to play with the children.

We meet regularly to choose and practice teaching games.

At the Jidokan with some of our favorite games.

Internal Notes (2015 2016)

Internal Notes (2013 2014)

Schedule (1:30-3:00pm)

Saturdays: 4/11, 5/9, 6/13, 7/4, 9/12, 10/10, 11/14, 12/12, 1/9, 2/13, 3/12

We meet to choose games on the 1st Monday of the month, during lunch.

We meet to practice teaching games on the 2nd Monday of the month, during lunch.

To Do

  1. think about how to divide kids each time (experience, preferences, games..., game design weeks)

  2. how can we evenly distribute the kids each time?

    1. do people want to teach the same kids each time? teach different kids?

    2. It might be better if we make a group for them and they rotate each month

    3. Some tables had fewer children than others

    4. Some games need more people than there were

  3. talk about research agendas: the point of teaching games (learning outcomes? social outcomes? literacy outcomes? 21st century skill outcomes?)

  4. how should we teach?

    1. teach in ENG/JP and then play in English?

    2. only in Japanese?

    3. somewhat in English and Japanese?

    4. only in English?

  5. How many different ways can we teach English through/with the games?

    1. preteach English

    2. teach the rules in English

    3. teach the rules in English/Japanese

    4. ask the kids before we play what English we can use while playing

    5. all play in English

    6. the kids play in Japanese, we play in English (/and Japanese)

    7. ask the kids to describe their play or win in English

    8. other kids repeat what kids say

    9. ask the kids after the game what English we can use next time

  6. What kinds of things can we do educationally/socially with the games?

    1. Ask kids to teach someone else the game.

    2. Ask them to compare strategies. (critical thinking / analysis)

    3. Ask them to redesign/improve/alter the games (creativity)

  7. should we develop some worksheets for after the games?

    1. share strategies, ideas, designs and learning after playing a game: http://brooklyngamelab.com

  8. Shall we lend games to the Jidokan if kids want to play them more? Can the Jidokan be made responsible like this?

  9. find out how many kids from last year joined this year

  10. look at the surveys we got at the end of last year

  11. should we add a matrix of game difficulty/English skills/player information to our site for parents/teachers to use?

  12. Some Ideas:

    1. Are there any good combinations between a game and another game. e.g. Hol's der Geier and Duck Duck Go have some similar rules. This is another way to play more complicated games in addition to a simplification of the games. If we find this (similar mechanisms between games), kids could play more complicated games.

  13. teaching ideas:

    1. build and play a LEGO game as a group?

    2. try a storytelling RPG game?

    3. game design:

      1. with LEGO champion?

      2. with Halli Galli?

  14. other:

    1. share the google doc with the staff and parents?

Resources

  • Interesting project requiring that students suggest and share strategies, ideas, designs and learning after playing a game: http://brooklyngamelab.com

  • the "SNAKS" (Social, Narrative, Action, Knowledge, Strategy) model from Scott Nicholson's book "Everyone Plays at the Library" (we have this in the Lab) in order to bring games that might appeal to a wider variety of gamers. Once we find out what kinds of games the kids like, we can focus, or offer different games.

July 5

June 14

17 kids came, and it was quite a noisy and active room!

May 10

  • We tried to get the kids to reflect on the games, but they too easily say "it was fun" and then just want to move on to the next game.

    • How can we get them to reflect and deepen their play and learning experience?

      • Don't show other games?

  • The long tables were a problem for some action games. We played Jungle Speed on the floor. The round tables are better for some games.

    • The kids should change places after each game?

April 25

We went to Hyaku Cho Mori to get some more social, narrative, action, knowledge/educational games for the Lab library

April 12

  • First Game Club day!

  • We introduced ourselves and the purpose of the Game Club. We invited questions or comments or requests from the parents and kids. We played a big group game (Wits and Wagers) and then split up into 3 smaller groups. We talked again with the kids and parents, and collected answers for our poster/information about the Club.

  • Some kids want to do some game design, some kids want to play in English sometimes.

  • What worked well:

    • Making nametags for everyone helps us to call the kids by name.

    • Asking the parents to ask questions: one asked if her 6 year old son could learn the games or not.

    • We learned that the kids have some game experience: Settlers of Catan, Uno, Game of Life, Othello, Karuta, Janken

    • The kids were well behaved.

    • Splitting them up helped.

    • 21 kids registered, we allowed an extra child to join.

    • The poster worked well, but some kids were shy or didn't know the games, genres, each other.

    • The Jidokan cleared out the room for us.

  • Some issues:

    • we couldn't introduce all of the genres of games we brought. We couldn't stick to the 10 minutes per game idea we had. We could only play 2 or 3 of the 5 we each chose.

    • some kids knew the games, others didn't

    • the kids got really thirsty (there is a drinking fountain on-site)

    • it was pretty noisy! (PIT is a noisier game but Labyrinth is a quiet game) and it might be hard to play a quieter story telling game (e.g., Hero Kids)

  • Possible research questions:

    • how do the kids learn the games and then teach each other? can they move from learning to teaching? how do they share knowledge in the Club?

April 4

  • We ordered notebooks for us and name cards for the students.

  • We planned the questions for our first meeting with the students (and made a poster with our questions to discuss).

  • We chose games to bring to the first meeting.

  • We talked about using the "SNAKS" (Social, Narrative, Action, Knowledge, Strategy) model from Scott Nicholson's book "Everyone Plays at the Library" in order to bring games that might appeal to a wider variety of gamers. Once we find out what kinds of games the kids like, we can focus, or offer different games.

  • We decided not to take photos of the children.

  • We went over the schedule for the year.

2013-2014

Future

- start thinking about research project (topics, evaluation tools … survey/interview/photos)

- develop survey

- is there a Jidokan research group or conference or association?

- think about kids being leaders/teachers of games? (possible with more frequent visits?)

Summer Design Club?

- work with the Creativity project to teach game design this summer?

game club templates… maps… route, grid, country, cards, dungeon, individual player boards,

Possible research questions or projects

- which games are good at the jidokan for elementary school children?

- the process of changing game rules for children

- effective handicaps to balance new and expert players

- the development of strategy in subsequent plays

Castle Panic

The Jidokan gave their survey to the kids at the end (lots of "it was very fun") and we explained about the next year's schedule and procedure (one boy said "I will join again.")

Kids can join from April 5th. The first date is April 12th.

February 8 Game Club

It was raining and snowing heavily; only 5 children came. We received a few surveys, and gave out some others to kids who hadn't come before.

Incan Gold

January 11 Game Club

8 children came, plus 3 newcomers. We brought all the games we have played so far and let them choose what they wanted to play. We separated the games into "short simple" and "longer more complex" games. This free play style worked well; the kids remember a lot of games.

Pit

We handed out the surveys to the Jidokan staff, the kids and their parents, and asked them to bring it back next month. Some of the kids said they really wanted to write about the games.

We didn't give the survey to the newcomers, but said that if they came again next month, we would ask them to write it.

2 more times to play until the next season (longer sessions, and we need to talk as a group to see what kind of format they want to create.)

December 20

Met to correct and proof read the surveys. Contacted a printer to print all the forms.

December 14

Met with Takeshita-san to discuss the surveys. The staff had no major issues, but corrected some of our writing mistakes. They offered to print the surveys, but we have a budget so will do it ourselves. She showed us the records of who came to the Game Club and who didn't. We discussed having a "3 absences" rule to make sure that anyone who wants to play games with us can do so.

We are meeting on 12/20 to correct the surveys, then to contact a printer to have them printed before the January Game Group.

November 16 - Jidokan game club

Spooky Stairs

We took all the games that we have played so far. The kids broke themselves in to groups (girls and boys) and chose their games. There was some disagreement, but they agreed to play others the next time.

Hey Thats My Fish

Kids of Carcassonne

Cockroach Poker

Incan Gold

We met Takeshita-san. She collected our surveys, she confirmed that we would have the club from 1:30-3:00 next year, and also invite other children up to 20 kids if some people didn't show up. She was also taking pictures of some of the games (and asked for recommendations for games to purchase with the budget. We recommended Incan Gold and Tsuro, and suggested that she go to 100 cho mori to look at some games).
