A small but lively group met at Betsey Warrick’s house on September 20 to discuss A Singular Woman: The Untold Story of Barack Obama's Mother, by Janny Scott. We were all glad we had read this book. It seems odd that Obama’s mother was, and is still, so easily dismissed as a white woman from Kansas when in fact she was quite extraordinary. Her career in Indonesian rural development involved her in women’s issues and microfinancing, which was uncommon at the time.
A couple of people thought that the author provided too much detail on the background of her sources, but in general, we thought the book was well written.
The conversation naturally digressed to Obama and the presidential election.
