January 2011 - Moloka'i (Brennert)

Thanks to Nancy for welcoming us into her home on Tuesday January 18 for our discussion of Alan Brennert’s Moloka’i. All who came found the book engaging and the story of the Hawaiian leprosy settlement fascinating. We admired Brennert’s ability to weave in a remarkable amount of history, while keeping the story a real page turner. Several people had some complaints about his writing style, while others (such as I) did not even notice the writing, since they were so engaged in the plot. Several of us felt the ending was a bit “happily ever after” and we spent some time dissecting some plot points we felt dubious about, but mostly that was because we had nothing serious to disagree about. The story is fascinating, and the book well done.

The evening was extra special because it marked the book club debut of George Abbingsole, Jennie’s new baby. Well, not so new now, he’s 3 months old and totally adorable.
