2021 Book Club Opportunities

Post date: Dec 20, 2020 1:43:9 AM

Hundreds of alums have come together to build a vibrant community of learning, connection and care in the college's virtual Alumnae Book Club. You are invited to join in January 7 through March 11 for the club's fourth book, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, by Pulitzer Prize-winner Isabel Wilkerson. As our country continues to confront racial injustice and the divisiveness of our recent presidential election, this New York Times bestseller will serve as a critical exploration of the notion that racism in America—and around the world—is a facet of a hidden caste system that affects our everyday lives.

Described by Time magazine as “A transformative new framework through which to understand identity and injustice in America,” Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents explores how America has been shaped by a hierarchy of human rankings and the destructive effects of that hierarchy on everything from the healthcare system to culture and politics. The book club connects through a private online forum, and offers a wonderful way to connect and network with fellow alums, explore important topics and engage with Smith during this time of physical distancing. The group spends approximately two months reading each book, with guided discussion topics. Best of all, you have input on the books that are read, can participate when it is convenient for you, and it's free! Click here to join.Don't forget that our East Bay Smith Club has a book club too - we've just released the dates for our 2021 meetings (meetings are virtual for the time being) and hope you will find the time to join us. We will be reading Trevor Noah's Born a Crime for our first meeting of 2021, which will be at 7:30 on Tuesday, January 12. Click here to learn more.

Happy reading!
