Studies of the possibility of predicting earthquakes based on changes in the behavior of fish and marine animals in the aquarium.

Observations of changes in the behavior before the earthquake of the inhabitants of the sea from plankton to the whale are known.

It :

- throwing dolphins and whales on land due to (as they assume) the work of echolocators;

- changes in the chemical composition of water that killed fish, as observed on the ship "Beagle" before a violent catastrophe in South America, etc.

This is most fully described in works in Japan (Rikitake, T., Prediction of earthquakes (Mir, 1979).

In the Haifa laboratory, the initial work was to determine whether earthquakes could be predicted by abnormal animal behavior or to determine the cause of these anomalies.

After the initial observation of a large number of small marine inhabitants, marine mullet and click-crayfish were chosen to continue the experiments.

From many reports of divers, it is known that the mullet create the dense flock, in case of danger. Also known method of catching mullet, wherein the low voltage electrodes create a small current in the water. In this case, all the fish turn in one direction - to the anode, and then they are pumped into the pipe.

In the course of several years of observations of the mullet and crayfish in the aquarium has been repeatedly reported the following:

For half an hour - an hour before the earthquake with a magnitude of more than 3 - 3.5 in the 500 km zone from Haifa, the fish in the aquarium were assembled into a dense flock, heads towards direction to the epicenter of the future earthquake.

If the magnitude of future earthquakes was more than five, the fish started to jump sharply from the pack and once again returned to his seat.

This indicates the appearance of water polarization in the direction of the epicentral zone, which acts on fish (in the aquarium) half an hour before the earthquake. This causes them to gather in a dense pack and turn their heads one direction towards the place of epicenter of the future earthquake.

In addition, another cause has been discovered that causes a characteristic response of fish: the appearance of sharp impacts that are not audible in the ear, causing the fish to snap off and even jump out of the water, as happened before the earthquake in magnitude six in Crete.

In the works described by Rikitake, also sharp reactions of fish to stimuli were observed in the periods before the earthquakes.

A very interesting reaction is observed in the crustacean Alpheus Sp. before earthquakes in a zone with a radius of about 700 km.

They live in the sand, dig holes, lining the shells near the exits and occasionally snapping when the fish approach them ...

But if in this area a push with a magnitude of 3.5 to 4.5 is possible, the crustacean does not go into the burrow, but sits near the entrance and this is very clearly visible.

An hour before the earthquake, he is nervous and clicks, shoots like a pistol.

Before the earthquake magnitude 5 - 6, crustacean begins to panic rush around the aquarium.

The author observed this reaction:

- before the earthquake with a magnitude of 6 on Crete (1400 km),

- before the earthquake in the Aden strait and Saudi Arabia (~ 2000 km) with a magnitude of more than 6.

Behavior of the mullet before the earthquake indicates the possible ionization of water by a low-frequency gravitational-seismic wave passing in the zone of the aquarium and about the orientation of ionization in the direction of the epicenter of a future earthquake.

Jumps of mullet in the period of anomaly indicate individual pulses, which may be foreshocks of a future earthquake.

The fact that the mullet reacts only in the case of a future earthquake of no farther 500 - 2000 km indicates that near the future epicenter the field reaches a threshold value sufficient for the ionization of water.

The behavior of the crustacean also speaks of the presence of pulses and an increase in the low-frequency background before the earthquake.

If a network of five or more aquariums is established on Israel or the region under study, then there is no problem to give a warning about the danger of a future earthquake in 30 minutes - 1 hour before the earthquake starts.

The threshold of such a forecast will be an earthquake with a magnitude of 3 to 4. But by the behavior of the crustacean and fish jumps, it is possible to predict the excess of magnitude 5, which is already significant and on the basis of this prediction, it has the opportunity to advance to stop the activity at the school and made evacuate of schoolchildren without panic.

In Technion (Haifa), as agreed by the leadership of the university department and the author of the method, the possibility of automating the monitoring of method was considered.
