World Languages Workshop

Changes the community wants to see…

  • More than language offered

  • Grammar only being test

  • Teacher training on how to really lower the anxiety in the classroom

  • Digital media use for comprehensible input

  • Offer different languages for kids

  • Language immersion

  • Early language instruction

  • Classes where kids can be fluent in languages and can speak it

  • Not caring about how this will impact test scores

  • More Spanish books available for every level for pleasure reading

  • More time spent giving/receiving comprehensible input. Less time spent teaching/learning the strict rules of grammar

  • More exposure to another or some languages and learn their tradition and culture

What excites you?

  • That our kids can learn 2 or more languages like other countries in the world and that they will be prepared for a global world. Brings more value to them when they grow up.

  • Relevancy will increase engagement by students

  • Instruction centered around topics and not grammar

  • Deconstruct the topic to find the lesson - this makes the lesson

  • Digital media is bringing cultures closer together

  • Virtual field trips

  • Professional fluent speakers excite me

  • Opportunity for inclusion of all cultures

  • Language clubs

  • Fun learning ways that don't depend on memorizing

  • To hear my kids learn different languages like Spanish or French

  • Changing the world by letting the kids to learn another language or two

What don’t you want to see…

  • Exposure vs. immersion - offer mainstream choice

  • An attempt to do too much and fail

  • The expectations for this school is very high

  • Dictation by test scores - teaching test materials

  • Is just focusing on teaching kids how to speak Spanish

New Opportunities you would like to see…

  • More real, well-rounded classes

  • For our children to explore other countries

  • To be able to communicate with other forms of languages to different nationalities

  • Balanced children - whole people

  • Silly games and rhymes to encourage learning

  • World languages library books or internet resources

  • More than just Spanish (Mandarin)

  • Have my kids practice the language rather than just learn it from the book

Deal Breakers

  • Losing my immersion opportunity
