Music Focus Workshop

Changes the community wants to see…

  • hope to see opportunities for kids to write and create music

  • music is accessible to all

  • emphasis on skills that can be used for life

  • more opportunities - not just band

  • dedicated music program at all levels K-8

  • I want to see more performance

  • to add some more instruments like piano and guitar

  • more current music

  • introduction earlier than 4th grade or 5th grade

  • learn to read music

  • different programs at different age groups

  • make it fun

  • intro to all music/instruments within class

  • I would like music to be available more than once a month

  • music class should be taught in school once a week

  • lots of different instruments - piano, drums, violin, guitar, etc

What excites you?

  • changing music in school

  • teaching music in schools should be fun

  • that kids will want to have music in their lives

  • want to play instruments

  • opportunity to mix music with other disciplines

What don’t you want to see…

  • no music class at all

  • basic music class consisting of a teacher and pre-planned songs

  • teacher directed

  • old music theory

  • only marching band

New Opportunities you would like to see…

  • to have more choices in choosing instrument

  • to see my child have the benefit of experiencing all that music has to offer

  • students have the opportunity to choose an instrument of their choice and not be limited

  • many forums to express talent

  • all kids have rhythm

  • all kids love music

  • like to see incorporation of current music into lessons

  • intro to instrument and music at earlier ages

  • more unique instruments

  • different opportunities at different levels

Questions

  • Will D39C rely on foundation to find music?

  • How much % of curriculum time will be devoted to music?

  • How many music staff?

  • Band only as good as feeder program?

  • Is music going to go beyond instrumental teaching?

  • How does D39C intend to find those kids interested or skilled in music?

Deal Breakers

  • no music at all

  • no introduction to certain types

  • old ways of teaching, classic songs that kids don't want to sing, limited in instruments

  • I hope NOT to see one teacher teaching out of a book. Kids should be playing, moving, doing, and creating.
