Writing
At D39C, writing is integrated across all subject areas and throughout the day. Through highly engaging learning experiences, students interact with language in most everything that they encounter. It is essential that students have choice in what they write about and how they write it, while also understanding that specific language skills need to be taught.
We believe in:
Writing integration across curricular areas
Teaching specific targeted writing skills
Creating an audience through online collaboration (i.e. blogging, Edmodo)
Authentic writing tasks that are meaningful and relevant
Allowing students to have choice in writing topics
Modeling great writing for students
Providing examples of great writing through the use of mentor text
Early Writing:
Children begin writing at an early age through drawing. As their alphabetic knowledge develops, children begin to use invented spelling or "kid writing."
