Measure Progress

We believe that ALL students can and will make progress toward their learning goals on a daily basis. Students and teachers at D39C have a strong love for learning so we constantly seek out challenges that will help us become successful citizens in the 21st century. Thus, progress is always prevalent because we are always pushing ourselves to do better. In order to measure progress accurately and efficiently we are currently exploring the idea of leveraging certain technologies that will aid us to report progress to all learners, teachers, and parents. We believe that progress isn't something that should only be measured 6 times a year; rather, progress is tracked constantly and reported to students and parents quickly. This will encourage continual growth in ALL areas and for ALL students throughout the school year.

“If we don’t assess what we value, we will end up valuing what we assess." --Will Richardson

“Of all the things that can boost emotions, motivation, and perceptions during a workday, the single most important is making progress in meaningful work.” (Amabile & Kramer)

Ways to improve Assessment

  1. Make the assessment mimic real life. Access to info during the test. Open book exam. A Googleable question is not a good assessment question. See the big picture and the relationships. (IF AT scratch cards) learning catalytics. (Individual , team on all exams)

  2. Focus on skills not content, the outcomes in behavior

  3. Resolve the coach / judge conflict. Use external evaluators. Peer and self-assessment. Calibrated peer review

  4. Formative Assessment should be 80% of the time at least.

  5. We need to redevelop a communication tool for parents that works quickly and often.
