a) updates
MP a lot of interest from athletes
Found out the cost to attend the event was very high - over $6000 (biggest piece of that was a charge from USport)
Boats are still going from Western, Brock and Montreal
MW initially found there was a lot of interest in the sweep side, then after plans came out athletes dropped out. No longer hosting a group - looks like Chuck is recommending a 4-
Would be curious to see how other sports are handling the higher costs of the multi-sport games
Doesn’t think holding out for Spring trials was a good idea - should look at changing this and having people selected in a different way
MR looking for a 4- for the women to train in. Have shifted from a W8+ to a W4-. They will also be holding a M1x.
Could have other seats to fill depending on U23s.
W sweep and M scull will be at Brock
SM will be hosting Wsculling
Out of 5 athletes, only 1 is dropping off.
Agrees that planning needs to be a bit better
She does like the flexibility to be able to seatrace for different boats
MP - there have been some challenges, but there has been some good learning for us. We’ll be able to carry things forward for next year
What has been going well - communication with RCA has been good and has opened up other opportunities for development athletes
b) confirm current committee members - Mike, Jane, Zak, Mary, Mark Williams
c) fill in vacant spots
None to fill
Eligibility committee - J. Durward
a) Updates
JD - lots of vacancies; looking to fill the spots
Typically has 2-3 people on the committee
b) confirm current committee members
Currently only Jennifer Durward
c) fill in vacant spots
Craig Pond (UBC)
Scott Feddery (Queens)
Governance committee - M. Waddell
a) Updates
MW - committee was 3 members, assumed Matt Sebey is not part of this anymore - didn’t hear from them.
One vacant sport on the committee
One proposal received from Brock
b) confirm current committee members
Matt Waddell & Pearl Schacter
c) fill in vacant spots
Kristen Henry (SFU)
Playing Regs committee - Mary Rao
a) Updates
MR - big thank you to Aalbert and Kathleen for the help on the proposal
No need to add more people - this committee is engaged
b) confirm current committee members
Mary, Albert, Kathleen
c) fill in vacant spots
Regional Updates
a) Atlantic – M. Horne
KE - no one representing Atlantic at the meeting; things are status quo. No big challenges or successes
b) Central – S. Federy
SF - Mac 2x4 was successful
Got on the water 6 weeks ago at best
Queens/Western race had to be scratched due to rain that flooded
UofT and McGill had their annual duel - U of T won overall
Most ontario universities have athletes involved in trials in welland this weekend coming up
c) Prairies – A. Schumacher
RH UofA - training is continuing, not much has changed
d) Coastal – M. Pearce
MP - had an excellent Brown Cup regatta that continues to improve
Run jointly with UVIC and UBC
Engaging alumni and building the event with the live stream - look forward to continue building that out
Speaking for UBC - looking for more spring competitions; having some early conversations with the Mountain Pacific Sport Association, entertaining adding some canadian crews. Doesn’t think it would be anything formal, but would be neat to get some more competition
Looking forward to hosting WCURCs in the first weekend of October
Unfinished Business
a) Playing Regulations
Proposal - M. Rao
MR - goal of this was to submit all of the proposed wording changes to the playing regs to enhance clarity and update language to things that are more inclusive and respectful to all communities that we support in our sport. Overall, what they wanted to do was to ensure they could pass the motion as seamlessly as possible.
Subcommittee Recommendation - NA
DB - there was no subcommittee recommendation
Executive Recommendation - D. Bechard
DB - executive is in agreement with the proposal
Voting
Vote of confidence
Passed
Eligibility
Proposal - J. Durward
JD - proposal to clarify eligibility rule for transfer athletes
Subcommittee Recommendation - NA
DB - came from the subcommittee so there was no further recommendation from this
Executive Recommendation - D. Bechard
DB - executive supports the proposal
AVS - no issues with the rule, but an issue with where it is located in playing regs; AVS and playing regs committee moved it to a different location in the CURCs playing regs document.
Voting
Vote of confidence
Passed
Para Inclusion
Proposal - K. Bruggeling
KB - proposal to include para rowing in CURCs regatta.
Subcommittee Recommendation - M. Waddell
MW - found that most of the principles and values were addressed in the proposal and align with CURA.
Executive Recommendation - D. Bechard
DB - we agree with the governance committee.
SF - what is the next phase of examination
DB - what we didn’t want to have was a discussion about weather this belongs in the championships and the other talking from a logistic standpoint on if it can be done.
SF - do we have an idea of numbers, or how many people this could engage?
KB - I do not know numbers, they are irrelevant because principle is more important
MP - questioning the process here - separating the values from logistics;
MW - thinks it’s ok to say this is something we want to get to, but it doesn’t mean we have to do it right away.
KE - wanted to point out that adding an event at a camptionships doesn’t require a university to participate in that event. We are trying to decide if the invitation should be issued, not weather or not a team should be forced into it
AVS - logistically he would resist. Conflict comes from poorly structured things; if we want to do this well, he would propose that CURA does a separate set of championships for para athletes.
Voting
Vote in confidence
Passed.
New Business
Cancelling events due to weather
AVS - in looking at para, we don’t have a process for cancelling events in poor weather; theres nothing that shows how we cancel C finals, B finals, compressed events
DB - could put a pin in this
AVS - clarifies that this is about hosting the event
DB - clarifying that if push comes to shove, what gets cancelled and how is that done
FISU funding for other sports
MW - would like to figure out what the funding difference is between us and other sports for FISU. There may be a funding gap on the university side, would like to have someone look into this and figure out where our gaps are
MP - agrees that we should get some clarity - unsure who would do that, but Mike agrees he could reach out to USport to see what information they could give
MW - maybe we can reach out to colleagues at our universities to see what we can find out
DB - can we agree that this investigation will live within FISU subcommittee
MP - yes.
Adjournment
Motion to adjourn
