Eligibility Committee Report

This committee received two inquiries regarding general eligibility consumption in a non-competition year, and eligibility of transfer athletes to compete in the 2021 CURCs.

The decisions around these two questions were presented at a subsequent CURA meeting and are summarized here for your reference.

1. Given the cancellation of competition in 2020, will athletes training at CURA institutions consume a year of eligibility (Section 4.1 CURA Eligibility Rules). Additional context: There may be virtual challenges (CURA/NSO/PSOs) intended to maintain some form of continuity and athlete engagement, where athletes might represent their institution.

Committee Opinion: The committee agrees that athletes should not consume eligibility in 2020. This decision is consistent with U-Sport and Provincial Intercollegiate Sport Associations response to a non-competition year due to government pandemic public health policies.

2. Would an athlete transferring from one CURA institution to another CURA institution (Section 5.4) be required to "Red Shirt" this year even though there is no CURC in 2020, e.g. not be allowed to compete at the 2021 CURCs?

Committee Opinion: The committee also agreed that transfer athletes would count 2020 as their "Red Shirt" year and be eligible to compete at the 2021 CURC regatta.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jenn Duward, Rami Maassarani and Philip Hedrei, for their time and deliberations in support of the work of this committee.

In response to a request for athlete demographic information (W/M, Varsity/JV/Novice) in support of the CURA submission to USport, summary data were shared for inclusion in the package (Refer to P. 2).
